On April 9th, 1865, the Confederate States Army General, Robert E. Lee surrendered to the North at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. The South did indeed lose the war. With their loss, the flag was one of the only things they had left over to hold onto to remind them of their bravery. The flag to them represented the many lives lost fighting for what they believed in. They fought for their homeland, rights, and economy. Many people associate the Confederate Army with only racist white men, but Confederates of the South also included African Americans, Native Americans, and Mexicans (Lenzini). In the article “Banner Headlines: The Fight Over Confederate Flags in the American South”, residents that were against the flag in Alabama wanted the Confederate Flag at the Alabama State Capitol Building taken down. They say that, “Opponents wanted the flag removed because the fervently believed that by flying it over the seat of the government the states were officially sanctioning the racism that they ascribed to the flag’s symbolism. Flag defenders, however, argued that moving the Confederate flag from the top of the dome was an affront to their Confederate heritage” (Leib & Webster). Alabama was one of the states of Confederacy and nothing will change that. The flag represents the state’s southern pride and heritage for those who fought for their state. Taking the flag down all of a sudden would …show more content…
During the late 1800’s, Dixiecrats, Southern Democrats that believed in secession and states’ rights, claimed that the banning of the flag was the equivalent to Totalitarianism because the tenth amendment was not being put into action. The tenth amendment was created to balance power between the federal government and states. The fact that these rights weren’t guaranteed like stated in the Constitutional Bill of Rights made the Dixiecrats angry. It seemed unfair. This proceeded to make the want for secession even stronger. Through the many years of generations, people still fight to keep the flag. In 1987 the flag was taken down from the Alabama State Capitol Building because the building was being restored. Many people demanded that the flag should not be put back up once the restoration was completed. Many lawsuits were filed and won. The flag supporters were not happy. Eventually, In Alabama, “In 2000, a Southern independence rally at a capitol complex drew a crowd of 2,500 with many waving the battle flag and calling for the flag to be restored to the top of the dome” (Leib & Webster). Taking the flag down for good created anarchy among the proud Southerners and flag supporters in Alabama. Just like the Confederate States for succession in the late 1800’s, the Southern Independence Union gathered together to create a rally for protesting against their right to have the
Miranda Wood B6 A recent mass shooting at a Charleston Church, where nine black worshippers were killed by a white man, has sparked even more debate about an old and controversial symbol: the Confederate battle flag. In his National Review Article, David French argues that the Confederate flag, though it should not be used as a symbol of white supremacy, should be remain in public for historical purposes. He claims that the reason the flag still hangs over Confederate cemeteries is to honor those who fought for the Confederacy, not to discriminate against African Americans.
The Confederate flag has been one the most controversial and divisive symbol in American history. Recently, in the wake of the Charleston church shooting, the country has been in an uproar over the confederate flag. The shooting sparked discussion on whether the flag is hateful or represents the south’s history. Numerous people wanted the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina state house. Many people believe that the confederate flag represents southern pride and southern history but in the mind of many others the flag represents slavery and the years and years of the oppression of African-Americans and other minorities.
May it please the court, I come here today representing the sovereign people of the great state of Mississippi; a state with a proud though in some ways a tragic history of the ravages of war. The confederate flag was flown during the period of time during the Civil War which lasted for 4 years. People may say that the confederate flag is a symbol of racism because the confederate states were fighting for slavery. That is a reason not to like the confederate flag but the confederate flag only flew over slavery for 4 years the American flag flew for way more. The American flag also flew over way more suffering than the confederate flag.
The Confederate flag, born from slavery and rebellion, continues to serve as a symbol of racism, discrimination, and white supremacy towards minorities. Despite the flag’s importance historically in Southern heritage and history, the banning of the Confederate flag is a necessary step to equality in the United
and it’s common to see the Confederate flag, from bumpers stickers, to belt buckles and even on many front porches. From my experience, the flag is very offensive because of the hate that it was used to symbolize. Others feel that Confederate flag represents southern
Recently a hot topic in the news is the confederate flag and the controversy surrounding it. The news making a big deal out of the confederate flag being removed from South Carolina’s statehouse makes it seem like southerners are still living in the Revolutionary war. The confederate flag is simply a historical memento for many southern states. The anger that was raised in many southerners was not because they “hate black people,” but because the flag meant something to them and their history. The article, “Confederate Flag Removed from Statehouse Grounds” portrays the pride that many South Carolinians felt from the Confederate flag being flown.
Some people think the Confederate Flag is racist. Many people believe that the flag stands for an ugly time in our history because the flag was made during a time where people owned slaves and how the black people were unfairly treated. Many years have been passed on but till this day there are many emotions spreading just like wild fire. Another piece of evidence is that even in the year 2015, by displaying the flag everyone knows it means hostility, which means someone may not be showing an act of kindness which in this case it may offend many people due to its background history. So if the flag were to be displayed many people can take it to offense and may not show any respect of what this flag has done and is.
It is the responsibility of every citizen in America to question authority, our government and its written and oral history, scrutinizing anything which has even a hint of uncertainty about it. All things true and just will stand up to the test of scrutiny each and every time. When it comes to the use of the Confederate Flag in the 21st century, only a full and complete scrutiny of the facts can determine the answer to this question. But to me the answer is clear, after close analysis and scrutiny, I personally feel that it should not be used or idolized in any form or fashion, but that is for you to decide, once you know all the facts. One thing I do know for certain, I will continue to admire, respect, and fly the American Flag high while appreciating its complexity and beauty all the

For the people of South Carolina, there is much to be prideful of. The rich culture and diversity of the state attracts tourists, businessmen, and families that integrate within the communities that have been established throughout the plethora of history that South Carolina has been involved with. The economy of South Carolina has been booming as various companies have stimulated jobs for people across that state, and this dynamic change is in part due to the national attention brought forth by the removal of the Confederate flag. The nation watched and nodded in approval as people rallied together in disdain of the Confederate flag after the wake of the terrible hate crime committed under its legacy. This event has propelled South Carolina
There were three national flags the Confederacy used during the civil war: the "stars and bars" flag was three horizontal stripes, two red, with one white, with a a a blue box containing thirteen stars. The second national flag was all white with a small horizontal rebel battle flag in the upper left corner; this flag was eventually changed for its similarity to a flag of surrender. The third and final flag was the same as the second but with a thick red line covering the right vertical border. The Confederate flag is misinterpreted to the point, where people wouldn 't even recognize the actual symbol if it was flying in front
So they decided to banned the Confederate flag in the states of California, South Carolina, Mississippi, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, and Some companies now everyone has their own opinion on why it was ban but I personally don’t think that they should've banned it. Some say it, they should not ban it because its's a sign of heritage not hate, some say they want to be a rebel, some say they like the way it looks, some say it's because they are proud to be a southerner. But my reason is because I like the way it looks and because it a flag that interest me and in today's society I think it just represents southern pride it a way of showing it.
The flag represents hate even if you don't like that. And yes some of the Nazis of long ago said that until the day they died..... that the symbol represented a way of life and not hatred.... tell that to all the Jews, gypsies, and prostitutes who were killed. If you still don't agree that we should just take down the flag then the actual the maker, William Thompson, of the "Stainless Banner" (the Confederate flag, set on white) and created in 1863 is quoted as saying: "As a national emblem, it is significant of our higher cause, the cause of a superior race, and a higher civilization contending against ignorance, infidelity, and barbarism. Another merit in the new flag is, that it bears no resemblance to the now infamous banner of the Yankee vandals."
The flag represents the pride that the confederate had about his country. Lastly, the movie uses the cross as a symbol. throughout the movie you see many crosses. There is a scene where Benjamin is melting the toy soldiers for bullets and the cross is behind him.
