Andrew Jackson was the 7 president of the United States from 1829 to 1837. He was elected by popular vote and he sought to act as the direct representative of the common man. He received sporadic education and read law for two years. He engaged in brawls and killed a man in a duel. He was a major general in the war of 1812 and he was born in 1767 in the Carolinas. He was nicknamed Old Hickory. Andrew Jackson married to Rachel Donelson who was born in 1767 in Pittsylvania county. She was eight of eleven children and when she was 12 her father led her and a group of others on a journey down the Cumberland river for nearly 1,000 miles in what today is the middle of Tennessee. In 1828 Andrew Jackson won the election against John Adams Jackson's vice president was John C. Calhoun. In 1832 Andrew Jackson ran against Henry Clay and won Andrew Jackson's vice President was Martin Van Buren. Andrew Jackson supported states rights and the expansion of slavery to the West. He also had a role in the forced relocation of the Native Americans West of the Mississippi River. Some people would consider Andrew Jackson to be a great president because he did things like revolutionizing presidential campaigning. He also used the power to veto bills that he saw unfit. Some people would say that Andrew Jackson was a terrible president because he made the Indians move and he abused the power to veto to try and take more control over congress. Instead of running on a party platform Andrew Jackson appealed to the people. Andrew Jackson got people more involved with presidential elections and won their votes with all of his public exposure. Andrew Jackson was not a successful President. Many of his policies were selfish. For example, so me of his monetary policies led to the Panic of 1837. He also ended the Bank of the United States. He took the money form the Bank of the United States and put it into “pet banks”, which contributed to the Panic of 1837.
Jackson was brought up poor and received very little formal education. He will always be remembered as a war hero for his contributions in winning the battle of New Orleans. Before becoming President Jackson was a successful attorney, plantation owner, and served in the United States Senate. The election of 1829 was much different than prior elections, firstly there were fewer voting restrictions allowing three times as many people to vote, secondly this election was more based on the candidate’s personality and personal lives as opposed to the real issues at hand. While former President Adams was being criticized for his unfavorable characteristics, Jackson was also being picked apart.

He took on the countries domestic issues and used his executive power far to its extent. Jackson effectivly evicted the native americans which stopped the conflict between the colonists. He vetoed the second bank of america, terminating the recharter bill from ever becoming a law. Also, he avoided south carolina’s seceding from the union.
Jackson stipulated that land was not to be bought unless it was gold and silver presented for payment. This order also dried up farmers credit and disregard land speculation. He did not have any children of his own but he did adopt three children and two of them were Native Americans. His first wife died due to a heart attack and was buried on Christmas Eve.
Although they would not have children of their own, Jackson adopted a child and named him Andrew Jackson Jr. In the 1790s, Jackson would help lay out the foundation for the state of Tennessee. He later became Tennessee’s first member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and was selected to be its U.S. Senator. However, Jackson would soon resign his seat due to financial troubles. Jackson built new roads and made other infrastructural improvements especially in the south that were of benefit to the more working class “common man”. The founders of the United States did their best to create a government that would not allow erroneous decisions to greatly harm the nation. They set a percent of presidents being politically sound and well-known; their beliefs for how the nation should be handled were essential to their campaign. President Andrew Jackson, however, did not follow this system, instead winning primarily by his personality and popularity amongst the common American. While his actions in office often appeared to be for the people, most had a hidden selfish side to them that he easily covered up. With the election of 1828, Jackson radically changed American politics, focusing them more on public appearance and personal character than on intelligence and political views, making personality just as, if not more important than the actual politics of a political term.
Andrew Jackson presidency focused a lot on small government and pleasing the common man. He attempted to shut down national banks to make government smaller. Jackson also enforces things like the Indian Removal Policy, which strengthened the bond between Jackson and the common man. Jackson was the first and only president to make the country debt too. All of these impacted are government today very much as well as other governments around the world.
Andrew Jackson was one of the greatest presidents who made very difficult decisions for our country. Although his choices were not always the popular decision, he made choices that were always promoting democracy. The things that make a good democracy are: giving people a say in government, having a good leader that you can trust to make wise decisions, peace and stability between each country and other states, and having equal power in the government (checks and balances). Andrew Jackson came into office with a popular vote and great support. His supporters viewed him as a man of the people.

However, he abused this position of power and made several choices that were detrimental to the welfare and rights of the American people. Jackson implemented the spoils system on a national scale and had unofficial members of his cabinet who did not have to answer to Congress. After South Carolinians were upset by the Tariff of 1832 he was angry toward those who did not agree with it. He also destroyed the National Bank and authorized the Specie Circular.
Andrew Jackson during his time was considered a very patriotic politician he hated the rich, he hated the Indian, and loved the idea of slavery. It has been said that he grew up not educated and had a bad up bring but still managed to get to a high political suture. Jackson at one point was general and had a very decorated portfolio, which made sense he would become president, Andrew was most well know for “The Battle of New Orleans” where Andrew Jackson, prevented the British Army and General Edward Pakenham, from seizing New Orleans nearing the end of that war.
The time has come to make a judgement of the great Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States from 1829~1837. Although some people didn’t like Jackson very well due to very few of his decisions, he made many good decisions during his presidency. Andrew Jackson should be remembered as a hero of the common man due to his unifying leadership, generous approach of governing, and concern for economic equality. Andrew Jackson was one of America 's “great” presidents. At Least that 's what the 20$ bill in my pocket tells me. I don 't deny the awe that his life story inspires. An orphan who turns into a self made man is very inspiring. Also his distinguished military career that helped him win The Battle of New Orleans is one of his few accomplishments.
