Why Was Andrew Jackson Controversial

Andrew Jackson wanted and even gave everyone equal economic opportunity by lessening monopoly with his bank veto. However, the financial panic of 1837 was caused by two of his plans, these include pet banks and Specie Circular. People in favor of the national bank proposed a renewal bill for the Second National Bank's charter. Jackson was not necessarily opposed to central banking as much as he was to the idea of the Second National Bank. By opposing the bill, the Second Bank expired and the US would be without an official bank for many years.

Following the legacy of Alexander Hamilton, Clay was a strong supporter of the Bank of the United States, which was a part of his American system. Clay saw the bank as a necessity for economic growth in America. However, when the bank was up for re-charter in 1832, Andrew Jackson vetoed the bill. In his well-written veto Jackson, explained his decision to veto the bill citing it unconstitutional. Jackson believed “if the government would stop creating inequality by giving artificial stimulation to the engines of the Market Revolution…men would be left in a state of modest but natural inequality” .

Andrew Jackson was a controversial figure because he did so many negative things to so much innocent people. He was one of the first imperial presidents and one who was not a Virginia planter or a New England Federalist. Jackson was determined to change the United States; one of his first acts was the Indian Removal Act in May of 1830, which removed five tribes from ancestral homelands (Cave). This act led to thousands of Indian deaths more known as the Trail of Tears. Jackson was also a slave owner; he owned over 100 slaves and believed slaves were put on this earth to labor while whites were there to govern.

The most important thing that Andrew Jackson did during his time in office was the removal of a federal charter from the second bank of the United States of America. The Second Bank of the United States, though it is a private Bank, actually it is a government-funded monopoly that acts as a central Bank. After Jackson came to power, he clashed with the bank, which he said was "trying to kill me, but I will destroy it!” Despite congressional opposition, he used the Presidential powers to revoke the bank's privileges, leaving the banking system without a central bank. By 1834, Jackson had essentially paid off all of national debt.

Andrew Jackson came across many controversies in his life and he had many ways to face all his problems. He was determined to what his mind was set to and Jackson was a very stubborn man. Jackson was not the kind of guy that would listen to just anybody he would do what he choose to do. In today’s perspective we see Jackson action as inhumane and selfish for only simply satisfy his own need to manifest further into North America. Jackson on the other hand saw the removal act as preserving the culture of the Indians. The Indian problem was way more complex that just simply removing all of the Indians and shoving them westward. Jackson had a four solutions to choose from and believe it or not, the removal and relocation of the Indians was the most just. The first solution was just too simply destroy all of the Indians.

Andrew Jackson was the 7th president of the United States. He was born in 1767 on the South Carolina frontier. He had a hot temper and would pick up fights easily. When The American Revolution happened, it ended his childhood. Jackson joined the local militia and was captured by the British.

He was an orphan and a veteran at age fifteen, therefore experienced an eccentric childhood (Feller 1). According to the Miller Center at the University of Virginia, he was described as a dangerous and violent man and often began “explosive” fights. Jackson was also said to have,” a hot temper, prickly sense of honor, and sensitivity to insult” (Feller 1). With this short temper, he let his opinions get in the way of quality political decisions, subsequently quarreling with his peers. With his strong opinions, Jackson vetoed the bill proposed for the second national bank.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Indians had a right to their land. Even after that ruling, Jackson still continued with the Indian Removal. He was messing up the government's system of check and balances. He forced the Indians to go on the Trail of Tears. This was the Native Americans journey to Indian Territory.

In the document “Jackson Battles the Bank”, it shows Jackson fighting off a monster, or the national bank, with a veto stick. Jackson was fighting to destroy the national bank. He wanted to do this because it favored the rich and not the common people. He was fighting for people to have equal rights. Instead of having no bank at all, he came up with the idea to create state banks which wouldn’t be as powerful as the National Bank.

From what I read and what he said, I thought it sounded like he didn’t want to shut down the United States Bank. And then in Document 5, Webster acted like Jackson should put an end to the bank by saying, “It manifestly seeks to inflame the poor against the rich, it wantonly attacks whole classes of the people, for the purposes of turning against them the prejudices and resentment of the other classes.”

Andrew Jackson’s sentiment towards the Native Americans was certainly not a kind one. Manifest destiny was a popular belief among Americans, including Jackson, and he would go to the extent of forcing Native Americans out of their homes to reach their “ordained goal”. He believed in the expansion of southern slavery which is why he pushed for removing the Indians west of the Mississippi, which makes it the more disgraceful. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 said that it will allow American government to offer in-state territories to the Indian’s for their western land. This wasn’t the case when the U.S. went in and drove the Indians out by force.

He mistrusted paper money greatly, as well as believed in power to the common people. Andrew Jackson feared the Bank’s power. He was afraid of the Bank becoming stronger and lending that power to the elite without holding accountability towards them, something he believed great powers should have; accountability. Jackson specifically stated that he believed the Bank made “the rich richer and the potent more powerful.” Jackson liked the so-called farmer’s economy since it motivated people to be hardworking and independent.

One of the biggest thing that Jackson had done as a president was in 1832. Jackson vetoed a bill that would renew the second bank charter early. Jackson stated “I will kill it!”. He said this because he didn’t like the bank at all and he believed that it made the rich richer and the poor poorer. He said in his veto message “It is easy to conceive that great evils to our country and its institutions might flow from such a concentration of power in the hands of a few men irresponsible to the people.”
