Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz based on a book by Winnie Holzman. The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz. Wicked celebrated its tenth anniversary on Broadway on 30 October 2013. It is the 9th longest-Broadway show, surpassing Beauty and the Beast. A typical performance runs for approximately two hours and thirty minutes. Wicked is famous for a long history, mighty messages and admirable songs. Wicked is a splendid show and have a long history. First, the story of Wicked is about two young witches. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman named Elphaba, born with emerged-green skin-smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing extraordinary talent. When she meets a woman named Glinda, a bubbly blond, their initial rivalry …show more content…
This song is a part of the dorm room scene in the hit musical Wicked. In the book Defying Gravity: the creative Career of Stephen Schwartz, you can read about how Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman conceived of the Wicked dorm room scene where Glinda decides to give Elphaba a makeover. “Popular” sung by Kristin Chenoweth is the most “popular.” Second song is “Defying Gravity.” Stephen planned the first act climax of Wicked in his mind as he conceptualized the musical. The song represents Elphaba’s transformation. She had grown up as a social out cast. During the song, she makes resolution for a new direction in her life. She no longer wants love if it “comes at much too high a cost.” Idina Menzel sings “Defying Gravity” in the best way. Third song is “For Good.” Stephen considers “For Good” one of the best songs he has written. The song was written for the show to try to express the leading characters’ feelings as they are seeing each other for the last time. They had changed each other “for good.” This song is also sung by other TV drama such as
The wicked explain to Amy she is the only one who can kill Dorothy. Along the way the magic, the characters, and the pressure change Amy. In “Dorothy Must Die” Danielle Paige illustrates symbolism by raising the stakes and building an on edge and sensitive mood. Danielle Paige uses “The Beast” as a symbol to raise the stakes for not only the characters
In every epic, many characters follow archetypes, or “patterns that are repeated throughout the ages,” and The Wizard of Oz is no exception to this rule. Dorothy, the main character, embodies “The Orphan” with her fear of being abandoned forever in this bizarre world and her task to return home. She must brave this alien world and all it’s inhabitants to ultimately gain independence and maintain her innocence. The Wizard is “The Creator,” who fears being revealed as a fraud and works to maintain his illusion of greatness. He must help Dorothy and her friends using his inventiveness and power.
The song, “Fight For You” by Jason Derulo relates to the character John Proctor in The Crucible when all of his friends and wife get convicted. John Proctor was with his wife, Elizabeth Proctor, in their household, when Elizabeth was sentenced to jail, and when they heard how the trials have been running. Proctor broke down as soon as this event occurred and forced Mary Warren to follow him to the court the next day. He relates to Derulo’s song because, during his time in the court, he continuously fought and tried to prove his wife’s and friends’ innocence. The lyrics, “It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you” are very similar to how John Proctor would react when Judge Danforth repeatedly disregarded what he had to say.
Some times we just want to start over again and the song perfectly portrays that. Also it saids “… screams but no one hears a thing” Guy Montag was trying to tell his wife about books but as much as he tried she wouldn 't listen to him like the song. In the story theres a lot of conflict that had happen but like the song saids that after a hurricane theres a rainbow. When all the bad stuff that is happening in his life its like the hurricane and the rainbow can be when he found the hobos that weren 't just hobos. Set fire to the rain by Adele expresses the feelings that Guy Montag could have been feeling.
However Ludacris only uses a few poetic devices, they enhance the tone of the song. People who listen carefully or read the lyrics to this song realizes that he is displaying a very serious story of three young girls facing hardship and their struggle to survive. These girls are fed up with the life they are forced to live and feel as if the only solution is to runaway. The ton of “Runaway Love”, is melancholy and dark, an opens eye’s to a problem that most people try to ignore. These girls should be enjoying their childhood but instead they are taking on the roles of an adult.
In The Wizard of Oz, the theme is related to the comforts of home, lies and deceit, courage, explorations and maybe a little politics of 1890s America. While Wicked’s themes seem to be aimed at beauty, racism, acceptance, good and evil, and friendship. The themes for both musicals differ greatly and send a much different message to the viewer. The Wizard of Oz gives off more of a “lets go explore” and friendship kind of feeling whereas Wicked makes you think about society and how we treat others. The biggest factor in that is Elphaba, and how she is treated differently because her skin color is green.
Shrek the Musical is a Broadway musical comedy that is created by DreamWorks Theatricals in 2008. It is adapted from Shrek, a 2001 DreamWorks Animation movie, as well as a 1990 children’s literature Shrek! written by William Steig. The original musical is directed by Jason Moore with book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori. After watching the recording version of Shrek the Musical, I consider that it is a successful production if the purpose of this musical is to amuse audiences and bring them an enduring audio-visual feast.
The plot runs from before the start of the Wizard of Oz and then proceeds alongside it, finishing with the supposed death of the Wicked Witch. It re-tells Elphaba’s story and shows how her differences rendered her a scapegoat, allowing the government of Oz to turn the population against her when she hadn’t really done anything wrong. Elphaba’s differences and the people’s reaction to her are obvious symbols of racial prejudice. This is again seen through Doctor Dillamond, an Goat and professor of History at the university, who tells that the Animals in Oz are losing their rights and their powers of speech. This essay will explore racial prejudice in the musical WICKED, analysing the songs and scenes where Doctor Dillamond and Elphaba interact with the other characters in the production to show how the theme is conveyed.
The Wicked Witches of Oz correspond to the major corporations during the election of 1896. The Wicked Witch of the East is the ruler of the eastern land of Oz. She is the equivalent to the real worlds banks. Because of her wickedness a house was dropped on her leaving “her two feet, still sticking out from under a block of wood.” (Baum).
This recording is a classic and inspiring example of the sweetness of pop, the passionate vigor of soul, and the groovy feel of R&B. There are many compositional techniques used to convey message in this song. First there is the bass guitar, which provides the melody throughout the song. It begins with a low pitch, and gradually increases until a climactic rise in the mood of the song during the chorus. This could be a representation of being at the lowest point in life, only to rise from the ashes.
The production ran on Broadway for eight years with a total of 5,123 shows and grossing 280 million. Currently, Rent is the eleventh longest-running show ever on Broadway. After Rent’s Broadway debut, people had contrasting reactions and opinions. Some critics did not appreciate the show not being family friendly, the modern-day issues the show discussed, the manner in which stereotypes were portrayed, and the intense similarity to La Boheme. Musical theatre critic, journalist, and author Scott Miller says “Rent shouldn’t have worked because its music is genuine rock and roll...theatre audiences loved it and so did the pop music audience...
Whitney Houston’s iconic acapella opening to the song is what catches her listener’s attention. This is when Whitney begins to build the dynamic of the song after the first chorus, when the song shifts into a stronger and bolder feel. She then begins displaying her uplifting and powerful vocal abilities. Whitney is known in this song for her capability to hold certain notes throughout her performance. Unlike Dolly, who was calm, Whitney is crying out and declaring her love.
Although she does not want to, their is a part of her that wants to be with him and is jealous that he has found another woman to love. This song is giving the audience a lesson that we are all strong and that it is always possible to be happy even when it does not seem like it. Despite how strong she is, she still hurts and speaks to her ex who left her broken hearted. “I heard that you 're settled down, that you found a girl and you’re married now,” they broke up and Adele is having an onerous time getting over him. While he is married and now moved on to new things in his life, “I heard that your dreams came true.”
One of the most influential American composers from the 20th century is Steve Reich. Steve Reich was born in New York on October 3, 1936. It is believed that his mother, a songwriter who also had a connection with music, influenced his affinity towards music. Reich studied philosophy at Cornell University and composition at the Julliard School of Music. He studied with William Bergsma and Vincent Persichetti, while he received his M.A. degree at Mills College (California), and his mentors were Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud.
On November 28th, 2015 I attended Ben Stevenson’s version of The Nutcracker which was being performed by the Houston Ballet at the Wortham Theater Center. The dance featured two separate acts and multitude of dances as well as a live orchestra. The Nutcracker demonstrated the ability to unleash a multitude of emotions as well captivate its audience with music composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky of the Romantic era, usage of modern technologies and techniques such as lighting and special effects, as well as its wide variety of dance types such as solo dances, pas de deux, and large group dances with a focus on a central figure or couple. Despite dance being the primary subject, it is necessary to note the performance of the orchestra of Tchaikovsky’s
