Women's Rights In The 1960s

Women’s rights and the way they live has changed greatly over the course of time. Back in the day, women did not have equal rights to men and they had to face many challenges in order to receive the jobs they wanted. Nowadays, women can get the same jobs as men and their power is much more appreciated. The 1930’s affected women in a positive way over time as they tried to work their way up in government positions, obtain more profitable jobs, and help provide for their families; but they still had a long ways to go getting equal rights to men.

Women’s rights activists gave their movement the title “the women movement”. These women wanted to expand their professions out of the house and into higher paying jobs. They spread their belief that women’s unique homemaking traits would make society more humanized. Women’s clubs through the late nineteenth century began taking a stand on public affairs. These reformers started working more outside of the house in jobs such as consumer protection and housing improvement.

Several social changes in the post-war years opened women to feminism's message. P. 2, The demand for a larger and more skilled labor pool generated by the Cold War, and postwar consumer economy were the driving force cause American society to become more open to feminism’s message. No doubt WW II created the demand for expanded women’s roles in the workplace, Document 1. Having proved their equal abilities during the war, they stood ready willing and able to contribute moving forward. Nevertheless attitudes toward women staying in the workforce after World War II were not favorable.

The women’s rights movement in the 1900’s fought for women’s right to vote and equality, for the most part. Women of color and women of different religions were sometimes excluded and Alice Paul, the leader of the National Women’s Party was no exception “Paul 's charismatic speaking and organizing abilities won her and the National Woman 's Party many supporters, but her domineering elitism, aloofness, anti-Semitism, and dilution of black women 's participation in the suffrage fight evoked criticism from others” (“Commentary on Alice Paul”). So, my advice to Alice is when fighting for equality you can not forget about groups of people and dismiss them. They deserve the same rights as you. this way, in the future it will make it easier for these groups of people that are already fighting against injustice to improve their lives, instead of fighting against what leaders of the time say.

as they did not gain or keep the access to the professionals nor did they come close to earning equal pay for the same type of work if they continued to hold their jobs after the men returned. Because of the frustrations held by these women, it the led to the start of feminist movements. The late 1950s and 60s became years of change for women with people becoming more vocal about equal rights for women. This led to President Kennedy, in 1961, establishing the Commission on the Status of Women which examined issues relating to women because of the growing interest in women’s rights (Sink).

All people deserve equal rights, no matter what. African Americans who lived during the 1960’s were treated unfairly: They couldn’t use the same bathrooms at white people, they couldn’t swim in the same pool as white people, and they couldn’t even drink from the same drinking fountain as white people. African Americans even went to Vietnam to fight for the common good of their country, though they weren’t even well respected after they risked their lives for their country. After a long time of being treated unfairly, people realized they needed to fight for equal rights. Both adults and young people had to help to change the nation.

For as long as before the American Revolution, an apparent inequality already existed between men and women. These gender roles resulted in men being the dominant people in families while women were usually confined in their homes, doing a limited amount of societal, economical, and political influence in America and themselves. Therefore, many women, particularly in the late 1800s to 1900s, began to realize their potential in society and the deterioration their imprisonment caused, demonstrating signs of resistance through two waves of feminist movements. “The Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex”  The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was passed in 1920. This granted all women the right to vote. This was a monumental achievement in women's rights. After fighting for this right for decades, this became a turning point in American history. This benefited their ability to vote and numerous opportunities in all areas of society.

(Book, 521) Before 1910, those who wanted women to move out of the home into social activities, higher education, and paid labor called themselves “the woman movement”. (Book 533) Educators believed that learning should focus on real life problems and that children should learn to use their intelligence to control their environment. Excluded from holding political office, women joined clubs that showed more interest in improving society than in reforming government. (Book 533)

The 1960s was a decade of rebellion and protesting all across the United States. Protesters were standing up for their beliefs and challenging the norms. Feelings of being surpressed and being infereior according to scoieties terms led the individuals to protest for change. Each movement set out to accomplish a different set of goals and raise awareness for their cause. The 1960s saw a huge variety of movements and marches all accross the country including the Environmental, American Indian, and Womens Movements.

Their role in society was believed to be that of wife and mother but our mind was changing. Women started to fight for some rights such as the access to the labour force during World War I, the improvement in education allowing women to attend university, and the equality within the marriage, in order to avoid subordination of women. Probably their greatest achievement was the access to the electoral process in the United States of America. Earning the right to vote meant a recognition of women power and intelligence, as well as their ability to participate in politics. This essay will analyze how women fought for their right through some feminist movements.

The Women’s Right Movement came to be due to the lack of voting rights, unfair wages, and unfair hours. They fought against the oppressive traditional social structures created in America. Their goals were to gain even voting rights for all women, to create laws to safeguard against unsafe hours and working conditions, protection against unfair wages, the end of domestic violence, the prohibition of alcohol, and the overall collapse of the oppressive social structure generated for women in

The 1960’s was a decade of social and political activism. This generation was swept off its feet by song writers who were not afraid to sing in protest of the government. A simple song, can have the power to change the minds and heart of a country, and how they affect or reflect our thoughts about the government and our experiences as American citizens.

In the 1960s the women's was restricted in nearly every sense. The women's supposed to follow one way of life. which it's to marry, to have a family and give her life to being a homemaker. The women's did not complain, but after while the household was becoming overwhelming with child care, spending hours of daily chores. The husbands did not give the wives no rights of knowing the family income or sharing the certain household.
