Women's Suffrage: An Example Of Freedom

Many of the rights we are given today are because of the various reform movements that took place in the mid-1800s. Some of these reform movements are the women’s suffrage movement, the abolition of slavery, the prison reform, and the educational reform. The Seneca Falls Convention, which was organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, and the Declaration of Sentiments, began the women’s rights movement. Women gained their right to vote through the 19th Amendment which was passed by congress and ratified in 1920.

The struggle for these and other rights would take hundreds of years. OthOther women of intelligence and prominence continued the fight and although she did not attend the convention at Seneca Falls, Susan B. Anthony is a woman who is strongly associated with the women’s suffrage movement in the nineteenth century. Anthony grew up in a politically active family and they worked in the abolitionist movement as well as the temperance movement in the late 19th century. It was while working on the temperance movement that she became inspired to work for women’s rights.

Women rights, probably one of the most controversial topics out there alongside race and religion. Many women deemed to be great historical figures and role models, while still being thought of as mere objects by some. But today the attention of women's suffrage will be brought into the light. On a crisp April's day I appear seated in my English class, surrounded by fellow classmates listening.

Women used many different methods to earn the right to vote in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. One method women used to earn support is that they organized a parade in Washington, D.C., the same day the president was coming into town so that there was large crowds. Many of the people in the crowd were men who, along with drinking also disagreed with the right for women to vote. They began to yell then even throw objects at the women walking in the parade. Eventually, the police walked away giving the men the opportunity to attack.

Why did it take so long for America to allow women’s suffrage during the Progressive Era? Progressives in America did analyze and attempt to solve the unjust and unfair problems that emerged with the increasing number of immigrants, unregulated businesses, urban cities, and economic disparity. There was exploitation of people by the rich and powerful. Even though women contributed behind the scenes during wars and started to represent in work forces, there was still opposition towards their right to vote. At that time, men of the country probably had the notion that women were still not educated enough to be involved in politics.

Suffrage (Voting rights) was a very hard to obtain power in the later 1800s and early 1900s. Women could not vote and african americans could not vote. In the 1920s women finally got the right to vote. Nearly 40 years after women can vote, african americans could too, and that ended segregation when it comes to voting.

The 1840s was the beginning of many reforms towards society. The Second Great Awakening created various religions based on the belief on how a person should live their lives. This lead to the Antebellum Era, the beginning of the revival in America. According to Newman and Schmalbach in their textbook, Unites States History Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination: women began the anti-slavery reforms during the Antebellum Era. Women wanted equality between sexes because the fourteenth amendment gave all white males the right to vote.

Thirdly, everybody wants grand houses and live happily but the Grimké sisters threw that away because they also want others to live happily, “showed more courage than any white person in the South of their times, sacrificing both luxury and their family relationships to work for African-American freedom” (Nadia T.). They kept fighting for years and inspired many other people, “Those of us who study the abolition of slavery and the winning of the suffrage for women recognize her role in achieving” (Carol Berkin). At the beginning of the nineteenth century, American society began to focus on the welfare of minority groups. Women’s suffrage and abolition were rooted as deeply as the history of America, but asylum and prison reform sprouted with the Second Great Awakening, a movement that occurred in the early 1800s. The Second Great Awakening was led by religious leaders who advocated for changes in American society through the unity of the American people (Doc. Due to the Second Great Awakening, reform movements were established between 1825 and 1850 in order to represent the changes the people sought for in the issues of slavery, suffrage, and asylum and prison reform. The social aspect of the abolition movement led to the visible democratic changes in society and politics.

During Progressive Era, there were many reforms that occurred, such as Child Labor Reform or Pure Food and Drug Act. Women Suffrage Movement was the last remarkable reform. This movement was fighting about the right of women to vote, which was basically about women’s right movement. Many great leaders – Elizabeth Cad Stanton and Susan B. Anthony - formed the National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Although those influential leaders faced hardship during this movement, they never gave up and kept trying their best.

The stereotypes that portray black people as dangerous and savage has persisted decades after its creation and now more than ever even though its results aren’t the same and slavery has been abolished black people continue to suffer the consequences in various forms. From being afraid of black people because they seem suspicious, to believing that the victim of this whole situation are the dangerous ones when in reality they were part of such vile and very well planned atrocity to cover the real criminals of taking over the world. I am of course not saying that white people are all criminals and do not intend to say that whites are the ones that should be suffering all the misfortunes that black
