Lejla Hodzic Mrs.Monroe English III(H): Period 3 Journal Reflection-MP1 When first writing in my journal I struggled with how deep to go with my discussion questions and what I should be asking my classmates. I feel that I have struggled with this because I lack confidence on what I am trying to prove or say in my writing. When reading in the past I have never pushed myself to question the author’s purpose or ask questions that invoke much thought. Up to this point in the year writing in my journal as well as annotating in the text, has helped my reading and writing immensely. My journal this year mostly contains quotes from texts and points from in class discussions that I felt were useful to understanding the novel and its purpose. I do not journal as much as …show more content…
When annotating and writing in a dialectical journal I have noticed that within weeks my opinions were not as weak as to when I had first started. But, you will see here that I tend to only scratch the surface of a discussion but have yet to invoke much thought. “In 1984 during Winston 's interrogation I stated in my journal that Winston’s last shred of hope to stay alive was keeping his last emotion the party had yet to take away from him, love. Winston’s love for Julia throughout the novel was the only thing the party has yet to cure him of during the interrogation.” I feel that this point in my journal brought out some opinions in my groups (in class discussion) on what emotions Winston generally had left. Some classmates felt that his last shred of hope to keep him alive was his hatred for the party while others agreed that his love for Julia would help him from conforming back to the ideals of the party. When discussing what another classmates have found in class it has helped me to understand other points I might have overlooked in the novels we have read. I have improved from these activities by writing down other points and
2. One of the biggest warnings in 1984 is to lose the ability to think for yourself and doing what you want. The party actual manipulates the whole culture to their liking. Throughout the story, the party basically controls all of the members of the society. Their ability to think for themselves is suppressed.
The third and final portion of 1984 left me feeling angry. I thought for awhile that Winston would be able to hold on to his values amidst the torture, and actually become a person that dies for his beliefs. Although, Orwell of course didn’t write it like this. I feel like Orwell just left this piece to entirely to be negative. I also feel this part Orwell began to really show the weakness Winston as a part of his character development.
Have you ever wondered whether a writer’s voice and the standard rules of academic writing can exist on the same page? According to Dr. Debra Pena, English Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and Mathew Teorey, English Professor at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and the author of "Using Freshman Composition to Analyze What Students Really Know about Grammar", a writer’s voice and the process of academic writing can exist on the same page (Personal Communications February 13, 2017, Teorey 2). However, my first essay in Freshman Composition II was a Classical Argument on “Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE): Is it the New Death Sentence for Future Athletes Playing Sports in America?”
Winston wakes up in a bright, high-ceilinged, windowless cell in the Ministry of Love. At last, he is at the place where there is no darkness – the lights never go off. Four telescreens monitor him, one on each wall. He is referred to as "6079 Smith W." The cell is crowded with ten or fifteen people, and very noisy.
The senior class began the school year with a metamorphosis in the twelfth grade English program that would become the underlying theme for a busy and productive year. The students first focused on developing their college essay writing skills with attention on word choice, especially passive verbs and pronouns. The motto of the class became “Clarity is the goal!” After the shock of the a new teacher faded, the class studied the principles of psychology and the theories of Joseph Campbell through the various modern movies and the Epic of Gilgamesh. Next, the Honors class class delved into Kafka’s Metamorphosis and Shelly’s Frankenstein, while the World Literature class studied Egyptian mythology and various creation myths.
Although it was a moment of great delight for us, lack of knowledge due to disinterest in reading remained a concern throughout the competition. During the final round, I realized that we were far from winning this competition due to our incompetence in History. Unable to cope with the level of questions, we lost this competition by a margin of just four points. It was a nail-biting test, which wrapped our hopes of winning the title. Had I loved reading texts, we would have won this prestigious competition for our school.
To be insane is to be irrational and disconnected from reality. In the novel, 1984, the modern view of being sane in Oceania's society is actually insane. The main character, Winston Smith, tackles a brainwashed society and a corrupt government who proclaims him as insane. Winston, however, is sane because he actually remembers the past, distinguishes the immorality of the Party and tries to ameliorate Oceania. Winston is of sound mind proven by his ability to remember the past, while the authoritarians of Oceania believe anything the Party tells them.
Juan Aviles 6172-10848-ENGL-1302 4/30/2017 Reflective Essay I became a student at Huston Community College in Houston for two semesters, and I believe that over the course of my stay I feel that. I have grown and learned more than I thought it wasn’t possible. I take my classes online to at Houston Community College already, knowing that I wanted to be a teacher; I had taken a few English courses and though I knew exactly what I was headed for-was I was ever wrong. Going through the English program special this course ENGL 1302 has taught me so much more than stuff about literature and on my own language, it has taught me how to be me.
The significance he places with her position in his life is partially his fault, because that’s all he allowed her to be. He prepared himself for the loss and in a sense killed her off. By sending her away and not visiting her he left her without any connection to her old life and who she really was. Conclusion Restate main topics (main body paragraph
My intro is not very good because I do not have a good thesis statement; my thesis statement was not very specific. My intro is not very strong and a little boring, if I was able to rewrite the intro I would make it more interesting for the reader. I would try to make the thesis statement stronger in order to make a more direct point for my paper. By rewriting my thesis I could make it clear to the reader that the theme of 1984 is the government controlling people. I could use the tiqatiqa format to help give direction in my writing and give a better reasoning and support.
1984 clas-sic: 1. a work of art of recognised and established value. Many things could be considered classics. Mona Lisa by Da Vinci, Odyssey by Homer, and 1984, a novel by George Orwell. Nineteen Eighty-Four, as it's sometimes written, was published in 1949 and since then has become an epitome of dystopian novels.
ENG-122 Reflective Essay My writing process has changed tremendously over the course of this class. I feel more accomplished, confident and I feel sometimes that my ideas and thoughts just come in to my mind out of nowhere and I start writing about anything now. I pay attention to my punctuation and grammar more as I have polished them more now, not only when I write but then others write as well. I am constantly looking for errors and I highly think this is helping me a lot in my career.
Another part of this disappointment was the sheer fragility of the arguments made. Numerous times, I did not relate my arguement back to the thesis which laft it in the dust. I received some wonderful footnotes from you Mrs. Immediato, including: “how does this relate to Romeo and Juliet”, and “Good, but how does this relate to your argument”. The second time around re-writing and editing, i noticed much more that you could have been picky about, thanks for not crushing my self-esteem. My first body paragraph started with a 1st grade level transition. . . . .
The class began with each of us writing down a topic from the novel they’d be willing to discuss and a topic able to produce fruitful discussion. After we had all written something down, we all said aloud our topic of choice. Some highlights include Christina’s ever-growing disgust towards David for taking advantage of Lara, defining what a terrorist is, the prominence of nature as a symbolic tool in the novel, and lingering questions regarding the main characters. We decided to first discuss Summer’s topic regarding the considerable presence of nature within Wasted Vigil.
