The civil war not only had an effect on the government, foreign policy, finances, but also the people that fought in the war or had loved ones in the war. Reading biographies and first hand recounts of the civil war is the best two ways to understand how it felt to live during this time in history. It’s an important insight that helps paint a picture of how living during the war was, and how people lived. The first recount of the civil war comes from William Stewart Price.

Document B was from a Pennsylvania newspaper, and it called for the Americans to fight harder to expel the British from the Americas. The author wanted to politically separate America from Britain and pleaded for the American people to make this political change. After the war officially ended with signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, people started to realize that there were issues with the Articles of Confederation. In the next few years many people argued how to fix these issues and how the country should grow. Document G illustrated some of these problems.

The United States Civil War is possible one of the most meaningful, bloodstained and controversial war fought in American history. Northern Americans against Southern Americans fought against one another for a variety of motives. These motives aroused from a wide range of ideologies that stirred around the states. In James M. McPherson’s What they fought for: 1861-1865, he analyzes the Union and Confederate soldier’s morale and ideological components through the letters they wrote to love ones while at war. While, John WhiteClay Chambers and G. Kurt Piehler depict Civil War soldiers through their letters detailing the agonizing battles of war in Major Problems in American Military History.

Document A talks about The impressment of Americans. The impressment ( men being captured and forced to join the Royal Navy ) of American sailers was not the Americans fault. The British wanted people in the Royal Navy so they thought it was ok to just take our men. Which its not. The Americans were very upset about this.

In August, 1945 the Japanese were forced to accept defeat in World War II due to the terrifying bombs known as “Little Boy” and “ Fat Boy.” Harry Truman stepping up to take over the presidential job and making the decision for these bombs to be dropped after the death of president Franklin D. Roosevelt will forever be known as one of the biggest decisions in American history. Over the years Americans have accumulated questions such as why President Truman made this decision, if there were any alternative options for peace, and if President Roosevelt would have made the same decision. Regardless of any decision that Truman made, most people would agree that he was making decisions that were in the best interest for our country.

Each of the ‘Declarations of causes of Seceding States’ documents mirrored the Declaration of independence in their writing and structure. Clearly, they were written in this manner to help validate their revolution by associating themselves with one of our most revered documents. The United States of America was once severely divided over an extreme issue that needed to be quickly solved before it caused any serious damage on the country. The Northern part and the Southern part of the United States of America were both having intense arguments over the issue of slavery. The North deeply accepted the abolishment of slavery in the United States of America. However, the South was strongly supporting on the ability of having slaves anywhere in the United States of America. Before the American Civil War, the North had a immoral perspective on slavery and the South had a righteous outlook on slavery they had contrasting ideas.

Important Women and their Role in the Civil War The American Civil war lasted for four years from 1861-1865. The war occurred because of a controversy on differences of beliefs, with the primary reason being slavery and state’s rights. The war resulted in the killing of over 600,000 soldiers. The war had a lot of advances in American culture.

Document B is an engraving of a painting by William Henry Powell. The painting is called committee of congress at Valley Forge. In the painting there is some of the army on the right with their swords raised and that to me shows patriotism. Also in the painting is George Washington in the middle trying to get more supplies and that means that he has faith in his army. In document D the quote from Thomas Paine, “these are the times that try men’s souls.”

It was a revolutionary document written at revolutionary times. Written by only a few men, the Declaration was unanimously accepted and ratified by all thirteen states and adopted into law in Philadelphia on July 4th of that year. It declares that the thirteen American states have united to form a new nation, the United States of America, and declare themselves free from British rule. In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
