College can become very overwhelming and stressful for most students. Long nights of studying, troublesome exams, and lengthy papers soon begin to weigh down most college students. Staying focused becomes difficult in college and most students turn to taking "smart drugs". The most commonly abused drug amongst college students is Adderall. The generic name for Adderall is amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. Generally, Adderall is used to treat disorders such as narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Amphetamine and dextroamphetamine are central nervous system stimulants that affect chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control (Drugs.com). Farah, director at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania, more than 25% of college students on some college campuses have used this study drug in the past year. One of the most common illnesses in America is psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, and addiction. The brain is next to other subjects such as the ocean and outer space in terms of scientific knowledge on the matter. Scientists still don’t understand the full extent of the matter, and still are learning new facts about the brain. This insufficient knowledge of the effects restricts the effective treatment of the disorders because the medication used is to handle the symptoms, not to outright cure it, or at least weaken the disorder. The symptoms of the most common disorders are dangerous because the symptoms can cause permanent damage on the human body, or even kill someone.
In the essay, Lamkin blames the use of these drugs on the universities and society for placing too much of an emphasis on competition and test taking abilities, and not enough on the actual education. By placing the blame on the universities and society, Lamkin is allowing the readers of this essay to relate and better understand the argument that he is making; because of the competition that many know is so great in the society that we live
In order to reduce the likelihood of Adderall abuse, it is essential that there should be a stricter policy in order to be prescribed to Adderall, or any other stimulant medication. In addition, it should be addressed the importance of taking the correct dosage and understand the potential side-effects when abusing the medication. Adderall can increase your energy level and even cause euphoria, which makes it easy to not take the correct dosage prescribed (Hall, 2012). Restrictions need to be tougher in order to get a prescription and regulated more carefully. My suggestion to reduce the medication misuse, on a micro level, is that a contract should be signed before the prescription is written.

Frank and Bobby have their own validation for doing a cheat-sheet or using medication. Despite their self-conviction, both practices are equally unethical. While Bobby’s creation of cheat-sheet is a clear violation of rationality, Frank using Adderall to stay awake is equally distasteful. The issue is their lifestyle and constant procrastination. It is expressed that the second type of consequential theory excuses any ethical path and is primarily focussed on one’s self (Werhane, pg. 3).

I also found helpful that aside from the regular drugs that everyone always talks about that there are psychoactive drugs that we use on a regular basis and don’t think twice about it. For example, caffeine, alcohol, or cigarettes. Although, we hear negative things about these three drugs such as cigarettes causing cancer, alcohol being the cause of an accident or someone being arrested due to their intoxication, or the lack of caffeine causing headache, fatigue, or decreased energy, they are all still legal. On the other hand, there are the drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, and hallucinogens that are just as addictive if not more but are illegal causing the individual to become an addict as well as having legal problems if caught with the drug.
