John Purcell was a man who faced a tremendous amount of adversities throughout his lifetime. As we can see as this short story these adversities prove to be to great and send him down path filled with neglectful parenting and alcoholism. The Father depicts countless times where John is unable to connect with or understand other characters in this book. We are shown this with his family and friends numerous times. John repeatedly allows adversity craft his identity throughout his lifetime. It is made clear early on in this novel that John Purcell was unable to understand the emotions other people -especially his son- feel. “Though his wife and children quarrelled often, there was no tension between at all.” is quoted that depicts without doubt that John cannot comprehend the emotion and thought of others around him. Again we see the skewed vision he has of reality when he “ Felt a warm pride as he stole glances down at the boy’’. Because he felt he had to “steal glances” we can clearly tell he doesn’t understand the role a father should play in his son's life. Warfare was obviously another adversity he faced in his lifetime which he allowed to shape his identity tremendously. Doesn’t everyone need to be rescued sometime in life? The narrator in “Sonny’s Blues” struggles with his own identity and finding himself. He has a sense of insecurity and conformity to escape his past and where he comes from. The narrator finds himself focusing on his brother’s mistakes in life when in reality; he is questioning his inner insecurities. The narrator believes he must rescue his brother but realizes first he must find rescue himself.
However, he does find some insight in his experiences. John begins to learn what it is like, from other people, to not have grown up with a mother, being “decanted” and conditioned specifically to fit a role in society.
He tries to get help from his medical insurance to pay the expenses of the operation, but they let go of his hand because what John contributes every month does not qualify him to finance such an extremely expensive operation. His son, meanwhile, oblivious to the sufferings of the father, comes closer and closer to death. Then there is a change in John 's good that will give birth to another man, a consciousness that will lead him to act, to rebel, without caring about transgressing the values that up to then supported his existence.
