Ageism: Discrimination Against Women

Ageism is a massive issue that is a part of our everyday lives. This form of discrimination can occur to any individual in any age range. Ageism is usually mentioned when expressing the prejudice older adults experience. The article, “What is Ageism?,” states that, “researchers have suggested that stereotypes about older people often relate to how younger people expect them to behave.” (Have You Experienced Ageism?2022)

A. Ageism- prejudice towards people based on their age (Moody, 13). With the life expectancy nearly doubling over the past 100 years, more and more Americans are surpassing the 65-year age landmark. In a survey of people age 60 and above, 80% reported experience with ageism (Dittmann, 2003). Ageism has harm on the mentality of the aging American.

The result shows that 46 or 92% of the elderlies wished that they had more respect to themselves. Forty or 80% of them said that they sometimes pity themselves while 34 or 68% of them perceived that they have little or sometimes nothing to help their family and friends. In addition, 33 or 66% of elderlies said that they are not happy with their accomplishments in life while 32 or 64% of them perceived that they do not have capabilities and good qualities that they can be proud of and shared that they find it difficult to accept the changes happening in themselves at the present moment. Throughout history discrimination has had a negative impact on people and has cause certain groups of people to suffer. Discrimination can be against people of different race, religion, gender and sexuality and in the late 1800’s women were one of the groups that were discriminated. Women had to fight hard to obtain the rights they now have in the 21st century and many of the women who fought for equal rights didn’t get to experience those rights since laws in their favor weren’t passed until years and years of fighting. We think people should not be doing certain tasks because of their age. We could change this problem by allowing individuals to do what they want, and if they are not capable we should guide them into another activity. this issue should be discussed, because we judge people by their age and evaluate what they are capable of doing. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, both Elie and his dad are discriminated.

Although Ernest J. Gaines shows some women as men's satellites, it depicts sexism in a negative way. Gathering of old men is a novel set in Louisiana in the 1970s. It is about a black farmer killing a white plantation owner. Many women in gathering are shown being forced into their stereotypical roles as wives, however, Gaines does not promote this in his writing.

Discrimination in Healthcare: A universal issue Introduction As humans, we will inevitably make a mistake that negatively affects another person. More often than not, this is not intentional and would be taken back if given the chance. So, it is not unreasonable to think that those in charge of managing our health make mistakes, even if they had the best intentions. One would think prejudice is a thing of the past. Unfortunately, that is not the case, prejudice is still a common factor in todays society. Vincent N. Parrillo’s essay “Causes of Prejudice,” helped me to understand how we are affected not just psychologically but in a sociological way as well, as John A. Camacho explains in his A Few Bad Apples opinion piece published in the Pacific Daily News. Both forms of prejudice are continued to be explained through Stud Turkel’s “C.P Ellis,” he gives us an understanding of psychological and sociological prejudice through C.P Ellis’own experiences. This furthers our understanding on how we can be affected by both psychological and sociological prejudices.

The media often reinforces two extreme stereotypes of older adults. One extreme stereotype shows the negative aspects by highlighting that old age is plagued by illness and a high dependence on others. The other extreme stereotype highlights the seniors that are doing exceptionally well by showing that they are completely independent, finally stable, and maintained a youthful look and persona. These portrayals do not represent the life challenges and successes of the mass majority of aging adults. Older adults are rarely represented in the media, so how they are represented truly matters to their overall image and approach to aging.

Younger employees can assist older employees by sharing new ideas whereas older employees can share positive qualities including experience, judgment, strong work ethic and commitment to quality.
