Such is the case with the topic of student debt. Graduates shackled to large student debt years after their diploma have more coverage than those who are well in control of their repayments. Why would articles and newscasts on college graduates routinely handling their repayments with generate return customers?

Student loans is the second highest source of debt of $2.1 trillion dollars in the U.S. economy right now. This student loan debt is not only affecting the entire economy as a whole. In America, people believe that earning at Bachelor’s degree is the key to success in order to be financially secure be set in life. However at the same time, the cost of tuition has skyrocketed, and the borrowing of loans rise with it. The rising of student loan and debt will reduce consumption, lower investing, lower the rate of home ownership, and overall make it difficult to sustain financial stability.

According to The Institute of “College Access and Success”, in 2012 approximately 71% of all students graduating from four-year colleges suffered student loan debts, with the average debt being around 30,000 dollars and in worse case scenarios in the 6 figure range. As a result of student loans, nearly 48 percent of young adults coming out of college feel as if the American Dream is impossible to attain. They feel as if they have an unequal or nonexistent opportunity to achieve financial stability and prosperity as the loans swallow them up before they are even able to pursue a career. In addition, 52% said they either strongly or somewhat agreed with the statement that their “need to pay student loan debt is hampering my ability to further my career.” One ASA survey respondent commented, “I need to have two jobs because of my student debt, and I cannot take employment opportunities that will not make enough money, regardless of the potential that they may have in the future (American student assistance 5).” Relates to definition because they need to have 2 jobs to be able to pay off student debt.

Most of my friends who are currently in college have between 5000$-20.000$ in federal and private loans. In many cases, besides for the loans, students have to work and study at the same time, which results in a stressful life for the student. In fact, many students are not able to finish their education because, since they can’t afford it, they have to work over their studies. Out of all the possible reasons to drop out of college, “the No. 1 reason many young adults drop out of college is an inability to juggle school and work” (Johnson). Finishing college is the most decisive forecaster of prosperity in the workforce and the inconsistency in college completion between children of rich and poor families duplicated since the late 1980s (McGlynn 55).

Every 26 seconds, one of those student loan borrowers defaults on their loan” (The Student Borrower Protection Agency). These are terrifying numbers that affect everyone not just individual debtors. Student debt is a ripple effect that will affect generations to come. Such problems become even worse for individuals; “these are ‘kitchen table’ financial issues that affect every aspect of their lives” (The Student Borrower Protection Agency).

Since tuition has risen 3 times higher the rate of inflation in the past 10 years, this increase a student’s chances of not being able to afford higher education and also gives them a better chance of accumulating debt post-graduation. Some people think that the college education they acquired did not fit the amount they paid for it, even if they pulled out loans or were an ideal candidate for a scholarship. Society often believes college is a necessary experience for a better future, but I argue that the future will not be any better when student debt becomes a part of life for those who follow that mainstream belief. Most parents often dream of the great colleges and universities that their children will get accepted into; however, they fail to think of the cost to attend those institutions. Financial aids! In recent years, the number of people who have been attending university greatly increased, consequently, arguments have continued as to whether students should pay for this prerogative or not. With no doubts, everything has its two sides and the problem of whether the university fees should be paid by taxpayers or not is not an exception. Still, there are people who believe that authorities should take the responsibility for funding the university fees. However, others disagree and opine that it is solely the responsibility of students to pay for their higher education that is in a direct connection to their prospering future career and life in general. In this way, it is important to review both sides of this controversial question.
