How do you cope with the reality of day to day life? I would like to think I handle the reality of day to day life moderately well like everyone else. However, I began to question myself once again as I read Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” This story, with its unexpected ending, had me rereading it several times to pull out key details that led me down the wrong path the first time. As you can tell from the title, something big happened at the Owl Creek Bridge, but you have to wait until the end of the story to find out the truth, or else you could be lost in someone’s daydream. The story had me intrigued by the different directions it could take you, but it all made sense in the end, and I discovered you sometimes have to dig a little deeper to find the whole truth about someone. Peyton Farquhar, a plantation owner in his mid-thirties, is being prepared for execution by hanging from an Alabama railroad bridge during the American Civil War. Farquhar, a supporter of the Confederacy, learns from a soldier that Union troops have seized the Owl Creek railroad bridge and repaired it. The soldier suggests that Farquhar might be able to burn the bridge down if he can slip past its guards. Farquhar, loyal to the …show more content…
The story is written in a way that makes you believe the main character is alive and free, but in reality you are reading the last wishes of a dead man. The ending definitely caught me by surprise due to author’s efforts in playing with the main character’s point of view. I think the author also performed well with descriptive words as I could paint the scenes in my head like the, “...whirled on with a velocity of advance and gyration which made him giddy and sick” and “...the abrasion of one of his hands on the gravel...” (Bierce 604). The use of this imagery also helped the author convey the illusion of fantasy and
Did Peyton Farquhar only commit the convicted crime of destroying government property or were his intentions more malicious than that? Was Farquhar tampering without authorization with government property to affect the war and to counteract the Federal Army, just so he could feel like a hero and aid the South? Ronald Reagan once stated, “We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.” That is exactly what I intend to do with Peyton Farquhar, make him accountable for his quilty actions.

Jason decided to come out to his coach, but is now worried he will not get his scholarship to Tech, he has to find a way to come out to everyone but still be eligible for the scholarship and win championship for basketball. I think the author does a good job creating a story with good realistic problems, and does a good job wrapping up.
The article starts off by telling the reader about Jeff Campbell. He worked for 20 years as a criminal investigator for New Mexico. He specialized in unsolved criminal cases. He is currently working on the Sand Creek Massacre. The author then goes into detail about the massacre.
Great book , sharp, insightful story. All the time keeps in suspense and does not know what will happen next. And I want to turn a few pages forward to get to know what will happen next. Otlisno , and a big thanks to the author for this work. Enthusiastic and fascinated by the style of writing of the author.
1. In my opinion, I like how death is the main character. I also like how he tells the story, and how he talks about his experiences. Death gives the impression of a caregiver, rather than a taker of souls.

Often regarded as one of the more significant short stories in American literature, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce takes place during the Civil War and is about a secessionist young southerner named Peyton Farquhar. Farquhar is a prideful and fallible young man who desires to help the Confederacy, but for some undisclosed reason is not able to serve. He attempts to blow up a bridge controlled by Union soldiers, and is subsequently hanged. Ambrose Bierce designed this short story to keep the reader’s attention throughout, going into the mind of Farquhar, and he holds their attention through use of vivid imagery, realism, narrative structure, and foreshadowing. Throughout the story, Bierce uses foreshadowing to indicate
Literary Analysis: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce, written in 1890, is a story about the lengths one will go to escape death, and the vanity of man. Part one of this three part story begins with a gentleman who let himself be tricked by “soldiers of the Federal Army”. He is awaiting his execution for plotting against the Union and attempting to set the bridge on fire. He thinks about his wife and children, all while standing on the edge of a plank on the Owl Creek Bridge, with his hands bound and a noose wrapped firmly around his neck. He dreams up an elaborate escape plan, one that he knows is not only impossible but bound to fail.
In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce, a respected Alabama planter and slave-owner, Peyton Farquhar, is being hanged for disobeying an order from the Yanks. The order is to stay away from bridges during a Civil War advance, and Farquhar is conspiring to blow up a bridge. Farquhar’s demise is foreshadowed using several literary techniques, such as preternatural plot elements and imagery. To start, preternatural plot elements are implied to foreshadow Farquhar’s death when he hears the distant sound of something striking a metallic object while he is awaiting his execution.
The sentences are mostly simple sentences, as opposed to long drawn- out descriptive sentences seen in many other forms of literature. This draws particular attention to the short interjecting sentences which seem to make the point ever so bluntly. This is effective as the book is being narrated by death itself which carries its own connotations of abruptness and bluntness. The continuous use of simple sentences throughout the book, one underneath the other, seems to create an uncomfortable atmosphere for the reader. This is because death and the ill treatment of people during the Second World War is often an uncomfortable subject and thus making the reader experience this discomfort is a success for the
The tone of the story is scary and depressing. A reason why the novel is scary is because people didn’t want to die at age 21 and tried to stay alive which makes them afraid of the D.S or the sandmen. The reason to explain why it was depressing is because the loved ones of the person that had died would be left lonely and no one
The book “Under and alone” debates a story of law enforcement agent, William Queen, who, in 1998 indulged himself in the most dangerous undercover biker ’s gang, as an agent. But later on he totally got mixed up with the gang and was become a regular member of an outlaw and violent gang. One might think, as I used to do, that there would be no contempt or rules to join a biker gang. But when I went through and read this book I came to know that the Mongol gang which was joined by Queen had proper and organized undertaking setup for joining the gang.
The author has chosen to begin the novel where the climax of the story was about to start. In this way, the reader will feel inclined to guess why the main character of the story ended up in that situation. Though the novel is fiction, some parts of the story had been based on the experiences of the author in his youth, as a journalist. Real-life books, mystics, writers and groups related to occultism and the esoteric were mentioned and made as a part of the story.
A happy ending, that’s usually only something that is expected in Disney movies and fairy tales, not so much in a Stephen King short story. Other than an ending that everything sort of falls perfectly into place, this short story is full of different perspectives and themes, yet it also still keeps you on the edge of your seat with a mysterious vibe. The theme of “everyone gets whats coming to them” or “karma” per say is definitely one of the most prevalent themes. Although Mr. Hagstrom did put himself in the position he was in with a loud verbally abusing wife and an annoying disrespectful son, he stayed patient and humble and simply was being walked all over.
Ambrose Bierce’s short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” contains a profound collection of information which causes the end of the selection to be exceptionally more shocking. Bierce alludes to Peyton Farquhar’s demise while still describing his adventurous escape from death. Through the use of a variety of literary techniques including imagery, preternatural plot elements, allusion, and more, Bierce foreshadows the damagingly shocking end of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. Bierce’s use of imagery throughout the short story contrives a sense of eeriness from his readers. A common occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge is Bierce’s manipulation of time.
