Beginning in the 1790’s, continuing into the 1800’s American politics became a brutal sport. Problems arose between the people as attention shifted from building a new federal government to how powerful that federal government would be. The decision of what America’s government would be and represent was more than urgent. Although American’s government was up in the air, citizens still made their wants for change known. For example, Franklin 's Address on Slavery (November 9, 1789) where he called for an end to slavery and gave ways that the tradition could be dismantled. As you can see, American leaders had a lot of pressure, responsibilities, and request at their feet. The astonishing conflict that separated American life during the 1790’s balanced on the conflicting understanding of the meaning of the American Revolution and how its legacy should be represented in the newly built nation. Disagreements about the question were heightened due to the French Revolution and what America should do, either take part or keep its distance. The period witnessed the exploration and colonization of the Americas. It also experienced the rise of sustained contacts between previously isolated parts of the globe. Many northerners, Benjamin Franklin among them, began to question the legitimacy of the revolutionary ideal of liberty, if the same rights weren’t awarded to everyone. After landing the presidential seat of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, Franklin started to protest the racist claims of his Southern counterparts (they argued that slaves were incapable of integrating into society). He also proposed legislation that called for the eventual emancipation of all slaves. After Franklin’s death in 1790, the political conversation about slavery halted. Throughout the years of 1860-1876, several events occurred, that were said to have “amounted in a revolution” over time. Complete succession of South Carolina from the Union in December of 1860 led a trail of states to leave over the course of time, leading to issues for the Union. Equal rights and privileges, and power of the federal government became topics that most often created enormous debates in these chaotic 17 years. The Constitution—the foundation of the American government—has been quintessential for the lives of the American people for over 200 years. Without this document America today would not have basic human rights, such as those stated in the Bill of Rights, which includes freedom of speech and religion. To some, the Constitution was an embodiment of the American Revolution, yet others believe that it was a betrayal of the Revolution.
