The Americans were more at fault for the start of the Mexican War. The Americans wanted to take land that was very valuable to Mexico. The land of Texas was very important to the Mexicans because that was where they lived. It wasn’t so forgotten plot of land that they owned, the Mexicans actually resided there. “At that time, only about 75,000 Mexican citizens lived north of the Rio Grande.” (History.com staff). The Americans also didn’t attempt to negotiate with the Mexicans after Mexico dropped all diplomatic relations with the U.S. We just went in and fought for the land. When Mexico “recognized” Texas as a country of its own, The Americans thought that they had won. They thought that just because Texas was recognized as a country, it
Ever since Americans settled in then Mexican Texas in 1800s, they feuded with their Mexican neighbors over political and religious views. The Settlers finally had it with Mexico after it went from a federalist government to a centralist which resulted in the Texas revolutionary war. To combat the revolt Mexico’s own President, Santa Anna led his generals and forces to end the conflict. The newly formed Republic of Texas gave General Sam Houston command of the Texan Army. The Texans fought well but they were forced to deal with bad conditions, to put it short, they were undersupplied and undermanned.
According to President Polk, “Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil,” (Document B). The Americans were not the ones that attacked the Mexicans; it was the other way around. The Mexicans and the Americans did not agree on where the border between Texas and Mexico. The Americans were still where they thought their territory was, and the Mexicans invaded America! The Americans needed to fight back to defend their honor.
We have common ground with Mexico, we both declared independence, Mexico freed itself from spain. Mexican leaders were aware of the emptiness of their northern lands, one of the ways to make money was to allow settlers from the US, they were encouraging people from the US to settle on their lands in Texas; however, this was not going as smoothly as they thought it would, Mexico was Catholic, anti-slavery, and wanted to keep texans under their laws. However, the Americans were not all against slavery.
It directly led to the war. The United States ambitions toward the Mexican lands in the West were getting the situation worse and increasing the conflict. The annexation of Texas was strongly opposed by a lot of people in the United States. There have been disagreements
Mexico attempted to kick them out only for Texas to hold a revolution against them making Texas, American land.
Of course, the Americans had chose to start to take over The Texas Annexation which at the time was know as Mexico. Both Mexicans and America’s protected the border of Texas. A war was started which was known was the “Mexican War.” As the war was over the territory which the Americans captured
The Mexican-American war was a very conflicting and interesting event that shared different point of views between both sides abd that took place between 1846-1848; which was ultimately sparked by a few short and long term causes. As background details, we who study history, we must know that throughout America 's existance, they are seen as a great rising nation and to eventually be seen as the giants around the world, Which in this particular event, the U.S. Was seen as a rising in greatness nation. This leading to the first long term cause of the American- Mexican war; to fully understand the American-Mexican War we must comprehend the tension that American and Mexicans had going in dispute of the territory
America didn’t get a yes right away until after a long war leading to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which gave America most of Mexico’s territory (500,000 square miles of valuable territory) in exchange for $15 million to pay off debts from the war. The Mexican war was a primary factor in sectional tension up to the point where this war wouldn’t have started in the first place
Thirdly, a second reason the Mexican War was not justified because US soldiers were in a disputed area. According to Jesus Velasco Marquez from “A Mexican Viewpoint on the War With the United States,” he states that “From Mexico’s point of view, the annexation of Texas to the United States was inadmissible for both legal and security reasons.” As well as, “The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a
The way they claimed annexed was by saying the Rio Grande was the southern boundary of Texas but Mexico said it was the Nueces River. In regards to the war, Americans were greatly divided. The northerners hated it because of the fact that Texas favored slavery. Those in the south liked the idea of a war because it would help expand to the west. This expansion would provide more land and opportunity.
When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.
Although the United States war against Mexico resulted in the gaining of America’s most valuable land, the war itself wasn’t legitimate because of the revolution in Texas, motivation for superiority, and the U.S. government’s actions. To begin, the Texans began an unreasonable war because they didn’t follow Mexico’s laws and conditions. When Mexico started selling cheap land, they set conditions for the people moving in. The people had to convert to Catholicism, learn Spanish, become a Mexican citizen, and have no slaves. Many Americans didn’t like being told what to do, and disobeyed the rules and laws.
