Statsky’s Argument is Not Explored Broadly Enough In the article “Children Need to Play, Not Compete” by Jessica Statsky, the author describes how the competitiveness of organized sports that have been popular among many young American children in recent years can have damaging effects on their physical or psychological well-being and proper development. Statsky said an apparent disadvantage of competitive sports is young children’s vulnerability to physical injury. For instance, she mentioned about Professor Tutko’s claim that many contact sports such as tackle football are physically harmful for young children. Besides that, children’s fear of getting hurt can also discourage them from engaging in sports activities as she refers to
In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete.” Jessica statsky brought forward a pressing issue of competitive sports that has now become a part of our lives. Statsky claims that these competitive sports have a harmful effect on a child’s mind. The extreme physical pressure is quite damaging as well. The injuries children face can sometimes take forever to heal itself.
A major reason is that sports keep kids healthy. R. Dawn Comstock, an investigator at the Center for Injury Research and Policy stated “We have an epidemic of obesity in this country, and sports is one of the ways for kids to incorporate exercise in their lives” (qtd. in Perkel 2) . Most kids don’t get active anymore.
There are many sports that are too dangerous for children because they aren't fully developed yet and they have a high chance of being severely injured. More than 448,000 football-related injuries to youths under 15 are annually treated in hospitals, doctors' offices, clinics, ambulatory surgery centers and emergency rooms, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons One reason football is too dangerous for children to play is because of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, otherwise known as CTE. It is a deadly brain disease that can develop from the repetitive hits and tackles young football players experience. Many parents start their children out at a very young age. However, because younger football players' brains and bodies are not fully developed, they are more vulnerable to injuries, mainly to their brains.
There are over 1.3 million athletes throughout the nation that participate in high school football, but less than 10% of those 1.3 million players even get a concussion throughout their high school career (Weber). The main problems that cause high school football injuries is from the improper teaching of technique on how to tackle, block, and even run the ball correctly (Weber). Even though It can cause injuries, kids should be allowed to play football because when the sport is taught correctly, it’s less likely to get injured and it teaches significant life lessons like teamwork, cooperation, etc. Concussions and injuries in football haven’t been a huge deal until recently, when multiple NFL (National Football League) players sued the association
But, according to , kids are now being thought new and enhanced techniques of playing the sport. The chances of injuries and concussions are rapidly decreasing. Therefore, kids should be allowed to play the sport. Moreover, it has been proven through many studies that active kids do better in school.
Athletes will struggle with injuries from being pushed too hard. As an adult we need to realize that students and athletes are trying as hard as they can and we need to step back a little and realize that they are being pushed way to
Contact sports involve touching, hitting, or banging other children, which is often why children get hurt in these sports. Among teens, concussions and death have happened. While these sports increase the strength of teenagers as they partake in a school activity, the risk of injury and death is great. The health benefits of contact sports do not outweigh the risks of playing them. The leading causes of death and accidents in sports are caused by concussions.
If contact sports aren’t banned, many children are going to get injured and possibly affect them for life. So ff you have a child that plays contact sports or you are a child that plays contact sports, stop playing now for your own
Children being vulnerable to harmful situations, such as the ones listed above, is one of the main reasons that the total number of children participating in competitive sports has been diminishing over the last few
“In the U.S., about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, and more than 3.5 million injuries each year” claims Stanford Children’s Health. It’s definitely true that competitive sports can cause all sorts of injuries from big to small. The media teaches people simply that sports leads to horrific injuries and can cause stress, but what the mainstream media hardly discusses are the great benefits of competitive sports. While there may be some negatives to competitive sports, that’s just life, and to add on to that; there are plenty of benefits which are sure to override to media’s facts. Kids should play competitive sports because competitive sports teach children powerful life lessons, contributes to their social and mental stability, and because of the physical gain competitive sports provides.
I believe you should let your kids have the right to choose if they want to play a contact sport or not. They are being active, increasing their physical health, improving their self image, teaches them to work with others peers, ect. If we are worried about kids getting injured, why should we get rid of the whole sport as a solution and not just get better equipment? We can 't keep kids away from everything that could cause a risk forever. Majority of kids won 't have long-lasting injuries anyways.
In recent years studies have found that some kids have been steering away from sports. Numbers in kids playing sports has gone down nearly 4 percent from 2009, according to a widely cited survey by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. Total sports played have plummeted by nearly 10 percent. People were curious why this was happening, so studies were conducted to find out. The researchers found out that there have been added pressures by three main sources, parents, coaches, and self pressure.
Children feel pressured in football when parents are telling them that it’s to dangerous (Rosenwald 2). Football does create pressure for children, but most of the pressure comes from parents. Parents need to think about the lifelong skills and benefits football can bring to their child. According to Walsh 1 “in most cases traumatic injuries require surgery and physical therapy.” Surgery in football can be a big deal, but it’s not a big deal for those children that think about the benefits of football.
Youth sports are very popular in today’s society, but there are different opinion on whether or not they are good for kids. Even though some people may not agree, I believe that youth sports do more good than harm to children. Foremost, I believe children who play sports have stronger social skills than other kids. Second, ports are productive hobbies for kids and they learn to spend time wisely. Most importantly, with obesity becoming a problem amongst kids, I think it is important that kids get exercise.
