Reading this article for the elderly care, I feel that ethical issues commonly occur anywhere in the treatment of older patients. I had a clinical experience both in an acute-care hospital and in a long-term care facility. Before working in a long-term facility, I was not aware of how many ethical principles were violated in the treatment of older patients as a daily routine as stated in the article. In reality, there are many situations in which older patients don’t completely exhibit their autonomy because they are vulnerable physically and emotionally and dependent on others. Therefore, they become more conscious of caregivers or healthcare professionals.

As a statutory adult social worker, I am responding to a service user’s self-referral regarding support for herself and husband, Ian, on hospital advice after Ian suffered a couple of falls. Jackie, 69, is a carer for Ian, 66, who has increasing needs due to dementia. D-The patient arrived on time for her session and informed this writer that she has decided to remain with the clinic as she learned on her own that no detox facility will accept her because she is testing negative and currently on methadone. The patient further mentioned that she is questioning as to whether or not her sister and her mother would help her as they said they would; however, the patient had a moment and looked back when her family did not help her as she struggled with her children. In the New York Times article, an older scientist is faced with an ethical dilemma regarding his research at his job in a laboratory and his personal health. On one hand, he is working in a laboratory that is investigating early-onset Alzheimer’s disease genes and pioneering effective treatments. Based on the article, the researchers invented a gene-transfer method that stopped brain damage caused by the disease and restored cognitive function. On the other hand, he just received a diagnosis of early-stage Alzheimer’s disease from his doctor. As we all know, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease currently, or at least, no cure out on the market yet.

Case Scenario Practicing in a school setting, there are numerous individuals in the same building looking to positively impact and change students’ lives. Interdisciplinary staff consistently work together to meet the various needs of the diverse student population. As the social worker, I am privy to the strengths and weaknesses of clients as they are presented to me by the student and his/her family and shared in interdisciplinary team meetings upon the consent to do so by the student’s parent(s) or guardian(s). Teachers are only present and involved in the interdisciplinary meetings when a student assigned to their class is being discussed.

The ethical issues that are faced in nursing homes stem from a conflict of the institution's policy, staffing concerns regarding safety matters, and the general desires and preferences of the residents. When moving into a nursing, there is a loss of privacy as many residents share bedrooms, bathrooms, and common areas. The resident’s independence and decision-making ability over matters such as what to eat, wear, and their entertainment can all be controlled by the nursing facility, and this leads to a loss of autonomy. There are also concerns when the decision-making capacity of a resident conflicts with the general well-being of the nursing home populations. Moral issues that come into play when the resident has demonstrated a lack of competent decision-making practices is that who’s input regarding the resident's well-being has their best interest.

According to Jane English’s article, “What Do Grown Children Owe Their Parents?,” she argues that adult children do not owe their parents anything. English mentioned that because parents choose to have children and raise them, therefore, children, who did not ask to be born, do not owe their parents anything in return for their upbringing. She contends that any assistance given to parents by their adult children is purely voluntary and should be considered an act of love rather than a moral obligation. Therefore, Linda’s decision not to provide financial support to her elderly parents might seem ethical according to English’s argument, but it is not entirely sound.
