Hospice and palliative care can be easily intertwined; they are both concerned with promoting comfort and relieving patient pain. Hospice and palliative care, however, are different in some aspects. Patients who receive hospice care are nearing the end of their lives and there is no effort to cure their disease; the goal is to provide pain relief, a sense of belonging from family and friends if desired, support through the dying stages, and to assure that the person is able to die with dignity. Palliative care is also focused on reducing discomfort; however, the patient receiving care can be at any stage in their disease. Additionally, palliative care can also be administered during a time when a patient is receiving treatment to cure their illness.

Consequently, the discussion about nursing home abuse and neglect should never be a topic of discussion to discuss. Mainly, because unfortunate occurrences of neglect and abuse in nursing homes across America should have never happened and/or occurred in the first place. Unfortunately, it does happen. Assisted suicide is “suicide with help from another person (such as a doctor) to end suffering from severe physical illness” (Merriam-Webster).This is a controversial topic because it can both benefit and harm. Psychologist must “Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity” Principle E of the APA Code of Ethics states that “Psychologists respect the dignity and worth of all people, and the rights of individuals to privacy, confidentiality, and self-determination”(APA Code of Ethics). Some patients a psychologist may work with might wish to use assisted suicide as an option to end their life. There is a dilemma between how a psychologist is ethically required to act professionally and what their patients may want or need. Psychologists have to consider other factors.

Central to the argument for assisted dying is respect for patients ' autonomy, but how far does patient autonomy go in modern society? If assisted dying is legalized could a non‐terminal patient autonomously request assisted death? The process of aging in not an unfamiliar topic to society and is an inevitable phase of life. Since 2011, the number of older individuals are increasing annually particularly those from the baby boomer generation. The life expectancy has been increasing with people living longer thanks to modern medicine. These occurrences are proof that civilization is growing exponentially, however the process of aging also means that the older individuals are facing dilemmas such as decreased physical functions, financial instability from retirement, and abuse. Even older adults who are independent may face some limitations.

Every decade our population gets older and a whole new generation of seniors comes along with a new set of attitudes and expectations as to what they want from an assisted living facility. And now that people are living longer, there is a much greater need for these facilities. They can provide a refuge to many family members that may become severely burdened by the arduous task of taking care of a loved one who can no longer take care of themselves. When simple tasks such as bathing and feeding become near impossible to manage alone, not to mention driving to the store and shopping, decisions about placement into a home become paramount. Most important to the family members is the ability of the facility to provide the adequate care that is needed for their loved ones.
