What separates a hero from any other ordinary person? A hero can benefit other people and has the features of a strong and bold person. Atticus Finch in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird not just has the features and characteristics of a hero but also demonstrates them. He does this whether it be through doing Maycomb’s dirty work or having a heroic job that he does in attempt to save the lives of innocent people. It is easy to tell that Atticus is a highly respected person in the maycomb community, but why is he so respected? He is respected so much because he is an active member of the Maycomb community. He is both legislature of Maycomb and a lawyer which are both very challenging tough jobs. Being a lawyer and the lawyer who is defending Tom Robinson is very hard Atticus yet he still does it in attempt to save the life of a black man, which at the time was very rare. Atticus is also legislature of Maycomb which no one besides Atticus will willingly do. We know that this is true if we look at page 236 of the book “People were content to re-elect him as legislature that year, as usual, without opposition.” Being a lawyer is very heroic job on it’s own, but being the lawyer that went against the racism of Maycomb is even more heroic. Atticus even says “This summer is going to be a hot one” in chapter 13 because of how much hate will be pointed at him and all the craziness that will be sparked from the Tom Robinson case. Some may also say that doing your job doesn’t make you a hero but, you choose what job to do in the same way Atticus chose to defend Tom
