Becoming A Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA)

My life is a puzzle in which I test and solve its unpredictable pieces. I purposefully piece it together by acknowledging and reconciling the most significant fragments of my life. As a first-generation college student, finding my place while navigating the education system has been one of my biggest challenges. Coming from a low-income, Latino(a) single-parent family, I have always been determined to be more than a product of my circumstances; instead, the product of my decisions. Accordingly, I am proud to say I will complete a health science degree that has provided me with invaluable skills and expertise.

Who would you want answering your call in the middle of a frightening hospital night: A caring CNA--or a grumpy, pompous doctor? For many, a certified nursing assistant is very critical to their hospital-stay care and often seem to make the difference between life and death. Certified nursing assistant are all over the world. Being a nursing assistant is not a easy task.

My childhood initiated a desire to help prevent and mitigate injury or illness; this soon flourished into an interest in the health care field. To help narrow my choices I explored as many science courses as I could. Talking with health care professionals and reading nursing textbooks I found in my aunt’s house piqued my interest in the nursing field and patient care. From there, I completed a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course which further solidified my decision. Now, I am fully invested in becoming a nurse.

When you became a CNA according to this article. “Become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).” They tell you what the job is going to be like and what are the requirement’s but what people tend to forget is the rewards you get and it isn’t like a award they hand out to you. This reward is a sense of feeling like you may an impact on someone’s life. The family is the key to feeling this reward/achievement.

Recently, I started volunteering at a local geriatric facility which is part of Peconic Bay Medical Center. I used to do this while in high school, and I forgot how much I thoroughly enjoyed it. The geriatric patients are so grateful to have you there whether it’s listening to a story about their grandchildren, playing cards to entertain them, or telling them a funny joke. I have not seen more appreciation from any patients that I have encountered than from them. When I help those that cannot help themselves, I am buoyed by a sense of purpose unmatched in my other life pursuits.

I was very clumsy when I was a little kid. I vividly remember falling when running around in our yard. It might sound horrible, but this led me to question how our scars healed and how our bruises go away. I would ask my mother, a nurse, as to why this happens. That was when I was a kid.

My Intent to Be a Nurse Practitioner Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.

This portfolio represents the professional and academical achievements of my educational career in the course over the years. It is the compilation of the hard work I have completed and my accomplishments that illustrate my strengths, problem-solving ability, work ethic, responsibility and moral and professional values. All of the education obtained during these years and the effort put in has given me the required knowledge, experience, values, professional behaviors, and ethical standards to make me a stronger and well prepared professional nurse. It has been a long journey since I started my nursing education becoming a CNA, nurse assistant, then a practical nurse LPN. Continuing with my education I became a registered nurse (RN) and now I am finishing my Bachelors of Science in Nursing.

Reflection: I am excited to work as a CNA to be able to help someone and put a smile on their face just makes my day. I feel I am a good fit for this position because I am always smiling and strive to make a difference in others lives.
