The first two chapters of Introduction to Communication Disorders were very eye opening for me. I came into this class not knowing much of the details about being a speech therapist, except that I wanted to become one. After finishing the first two chapters, I am still certain that I want to be a Speech-Language Pathologist. I am looking forward to continuing in this major.
The first chapter talked about the basic terminology that comes along with being a speech therapist. These words included the different kinds of communication, symbols, and different disorders that tie into being a speech-language pathologist. Communication is the exchange of information between a sender and a receiver. Messages may be verbal, non-verbal, and graphic in nature. Verbal is through speech, non-verbal is facial expressions and body language, and graphic is writing and pictures. A symbol is something that represents something else with meaning. There are different types of disorders including speech disorders, language disorders, and hearing disorders. We discussed the different components of language including phonology, morphology, and syntax. Phonology is the sound system of language. Morphology is the structure of words. Syntax is the set of grammar rules to make sentences. I found the different forms of non-verbal communication very interesting. I did not realize there were so many different categories that fall under non-verbal communication. Nonvocal elements of nonverbal communication include body language such as gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact. There is also non-linguistic meaning without language. Kinesics which means body language is another category that falls under non-verbal
What do you understand by verbal and non-verbal communication and List at least 5 points that could be done to improve communication within a healthcare sector. Communication is loosely outlined as sending or receiving messages that contain meaning and these messages often contain thoughts, ideas, opinions, feelings and information. While these messages can be communicated verbally through spoken word they are also communicated non-verbally through mannerisms such as body language, eye contact and gestures. As verbal communication coexists alongside non-verbal communication it can impact how the information is interpreted. Information can be interpreted very differently by subtle differences in mannerisms.
A symbol is a representation of something. A symbol is often a material or object signifying something abstract. In the novel speaks by Laurie Hassle Anderson, the use of symbolism helps the reader better understand the inner working of the main character. Laurie uses mirrors, blood, a Maya Angelo poster, seeds, plants, and trees to help the reader better understand Melinda. Mirrors.
Health care is a term that describes a broad range of services. Members of a health care team range from family members to neurosurgeons, but each member of a patient’s health care team plays a critical role in optimizing patient care. Therefore, it is important to recognize and appreciate all the players in the medical field and their contributions to health care. I was drawn to the medical field because of my love of science and endless curiosity. However, it was not until high school that I narrowed my science passion down to human science.
The profession of Speech Language Pathology enables others to be heard and gives them the ability to have a voice. As a Communication Disorders major, I found my voice through education and personal experiences. During my undergraduate career, I have balanced extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and leadership roles while maintaining superior grades in my coursework. However, my qualities go far beyond my list of accomplishments. Passion, my value of education, and my objective to improve the lives of others have driven me to pursue a career in Speech Language Pathology.

Communication is the process of transferring of information. Viswanathan (2010) says communication can take many forms of verbal and non-verbal methods which may include speaking, writing, gestures, expressions, listening and body language to name a few. All of these things should be taken into consideration to ensure an effective means of sending and receiving information. How and what information is sent may not be received in the same manner intended.
I really enjoyed Mrs. Hayes questioning and answering panel. I really liked how she gave insight on what is like to be a speech-language pathologist in the school system. It was overwhelming. I can barely handle one client now and she has about 40. I feel that I need to improve my time management and organization.
There are different types of nonverbal communication. Body movements is a different type of nonverbal communication. Body movements are the most noticeable elements of nonverbal communication. Body Movement consists of posture, gestures, face and eyes. A posture can say a lot of a person.
4. Symbols – Is a cue which is use to express an action, event or place or a person out of context, to use signal as a symbol. This is very important because it can help people with dementia or learning difficulties to understand receptive and express themselves. Also in health sector a symbol can help both service providers and client to identify emergency exit in case of fire when evacuating the building and sometime symbol is been used in care home to make the careers know who is safe and who will have to leave the building in care of fire. Parts of object, pictures, signs, print and actions can all be use as symbols.
She Cried, "Your Symbols Look So Cool. Your Symbols Always Look So Cool." A symbol is a word that is understood as a representation of an idea. Symbolism gives a universal feeling to the themes and characters in works of literature. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, symbols intertwine within the plot of the novel drawing importance to events and ideas within the overall story.
Speech Therapist A speech therapist (which is also called a speech-language pathologist) works with babies, children and adults to treat and help with different levels of speech, communication problems, difficulties eating, drinking and swallowing. They diagnose, treat and help prevent speech and other related disorders such as voice, speech and language disorders. Even though tasks vary, some responsibilities would be: assessing and treating difficulties with communication and swallowing implementing and reviewing treatment plans and analyzing and diagnosing the extent of speech impairments help those whose speech is affected by emotional issues, various learning disabilities and physical impairments, such as a cleft palate Keep long-term records on clients in case problems arise in the future Some common reasons a speech therapist is needed would be stroke, head injury, dysphagia, apraxia, expressive disorder and articulation disorders.
Nonverbal communication is defined as messages expressed by nonlinguistic means (Adler, et al 174). In the video, Amy and Sheldon both used many forms of nonverbal communication to get their point across. A way that Sheldon used nonverbal communication was through his eyes and body movement. When given the paper of their joint voicemail recording Sheldon immediately got wide-eyed and moved back a little. Oculesics is defined as the study of how the eyes can communicate (Adler, et al 186).
It is also known as nonverbal communication. This type of communication includes no words but gesture, body language, eye contact, posture or facial expressions. When we interact with others, we continuously exchange wordless signals. A considerable part of nonverbal communication is facial expressions as these indicate others about our feeling, attitudes, states of mind and relationships. Facial expression also plays a major role in communication since the expression on our face say a lot about our mood.
Assisting Others With Their Ability To Communicate: Speech Pathology Degree (1084 Words) Communication is a fundamental aspect of life and everybody has a desire to be heard and understood. However, for people with communication disorders this can be extremely difficult. If you want to play a part in helping these people to communicate then a degree in speech pathology can set you on the right path. The assistance that you are able to give people can be life-changing for them, which makes it a very rewarding profession. When working in this field you won’t just be dealing with people who have verbal communication problems, but also those who cannot swallow properly.
When communicating with others, it is very important to show a positive impression using non-verbal, this can determine how your verbal communication is received by others. Non-verbal communications are things like eye contact, your posture, body movements and expressions you use when talking to others. All the actions that a customer would notice, it gives a general impression on how interested you are and if others around you are able to judge if you are interested or listening to them. Lack of non-verbal communication can give the customer a bad impression of you.
