I believe that Emerson would indeed consider Beowulf to be an epic hero in this story. Beowulf is a brave, independent, and strong warrior who refused to back down from a fight. His heroism also displays his amazing leadership qualities. He is an honest man who does what he says he is going to do without any complaint or remorse. I think one major thing to point out is that he would not fight Grendel using a weapons (unless you believe his courage and honorability are the only weapons he needs) to ensure that his brawl with Grendel would be on even grounds. However, in a deeper look into the poem you can tell that deep down, Beowulf may just be fighting for the glory of the kill. It appears as if in some sense he knew that he had that fight
What do you consider a hero? Many people have different ways of seeing someone as a hero, such as what they do or what they look like. Does Beowulf really qualify as a mythic hero according to Joseph campbell’s “ The Hero with a Thousand Faces”? Yes, Beowulf does qualify as a mythic hero for many reasons.
Looking at Emerson 's discription of a hero I think that Emerson would consider Beowulf as a hero because Beowulf is a very strong , couraged , and brave person that shows no weakness. To Emerson , someone that shows no signs of weakness , is brave , and has courage is a hero . Beowulf disgards his own safety to fight against the evil and for what is right . Fighting for others is a big part of being a hero . Beowulf is a indiviual that declares he can handily fight an infninite army of enemies.
Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic that was told by scops, or story tellers, in the 6th century. The epic is about how Beowulf, a brave hero, fights evil monsters that are harming the people of Herot. Because Beowulf was written so long ago, specifically in medieval times, he is considered a hero. Some people would disagree that he is a true hero based on the reasons why he fights. Yet, no matter what motives are behind his actions, Beowulf is still a true hero because of his constant show of courage, combativeness, and loyalty.
In this poem, it talk about a warrior named Beowulf that leaves his home to go protect another kingdom. He heard about the chaos that was going on because of the monster named Grendel. He came to Hrothgar to fight and kill Grendel to seize the chaos. This then leads to him fighting Grendel’s mother who ends up killing. The question is, what makes beowulf an epic hero.
Beowulf was one of the greatest hero’s of his time. He was known by all for his heroism and bravery. His actions went world wide no one did not know who he was. Beowulf has been on countless journeys of which death would have been the fate of any normal man. He has been the hero in many people's lives.
“Dripping with my enemies blood, I drove five great giants into chains chased all of that race from the earth.” An epic hero is someone who possess qualities such as bravery, strength, and superhuman. Beowulf’s willingness and sacrifice of himself to save others is why I must really say he is and epic hero. Some people could be heroes but still not have it in them to want to slay dragons and fight monster, But that was no challenge for Beowulf.
In the epic poem “Beowulf” the character Beowulf is the foundation for all of our modern heroes, but was he really a great hero? A hero is classified as a person who is admired for their bravery, achievements, or nobility. Although Beowulf displays all these qualities, there are several reasons he is not a hero, mainly him being egotistical and arrogant. This is why Beowulf is not a heroic person. Beowulf is often caught bragging about himself and his great accomplishments.
I have encountered beowolf’s epic poem back when I was in high school. It was about a hero of the Geats. That’s all I can remember. In the movie, it shows how men struggle from fame, honour, brotherhood, loyalty, and promiscuity that are passed on from generation to generation.
Adrianna Traslavina October 13, 2017 Mrs. Serwa Period 1 In the anonymous story “Beowulf”, Beowulf shows several characteristics of an epic hero. In the beginning Beowulf born from an epic hero, shows Courage and bravery, as he is called upon by the King of Danes to kill the Demon Grendel. Grendel brutally kills the innocent, and helpless people for no other than the enjoyment of his time. Beowulf and Grendel finally meet and Beowulf kills Grendel, by Beowulf from extraordinary and courageously ripping out Grendel arm and then bleeds out and dies from loss of blood.
Beowulf a poem that is considered by most as one of the most important works of English literature, but this poem is far from just an important poem its an example of the capability of the human creativity. At first glance the poem can seem as a classic story of a hero that defeats evil and is respected all throughout the land, but after carefully analyzing this story you come to a realization that its not that simple . Beowulf is a hero due to the definition of hero, a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities, but just because he is a hero it does not make him the "good guy". Beowulf symbolizes the human flaw for what makes him great is what leads to his own demise, he has faith in his morals
A hero does not fight for fame and glory but for the greater good. A hero is someone who goes through adversity to help others in desperate times. A hero fights evil, and defends people. Beowulf should be considered a hero because he is a strong, brave warrior who defended his people and slayed evil monsters. Beowulf proves himself to be a strong, brave warrior by killing Grendel the monster.

Beowulf is an epic hero because of his strength. His strength isn’t the same as an ordinary man, “He twisted in pain and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped muscle and on split and broke” (lines 337-340). No ordinary man would be
Beowulf was believed to be the mightiest and most bravest off the hero's. In the poem it states, “ In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlac's follower and the strongest of the geats - greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world” (Pg. 3-4). When this is said Beowulf had already found out that grendel had killed 30 men in the Herot and is getting ready to gather his men and go kill Grendel. With this being said everyone in the poem believed that Beowulf was the ultimate leader, but grendel was the perfect monster.
The poem of Beowulf reveals a valiant, epic hero who claims he has endured the impossible. Beowulf is shown exhibiting his public reputation by bragging about his phenomenal endurances and capabilities. The boastful protagonist also displays the value of bravery by defeating foes, like Grendel, using his bare strength to take on foes by himself. In conclusion, Beowulf demonstrates the Anglo Saxon values of public reputation, and bravery in Anglo Saxon society.
