President William Clinton Facing Impeachment. President Bill Clinton was the forty second president of the U.S. His term lasted between 1993 and 2001 and was marked by financial prosperity. Although Clinton was the first baby boomer president, his reign was marked by an impeachment controversy. He went to U.S records for being the second American president to go through impeachment charges. President William Clinton faced impeachment by the House of the Representatives on two charges including obstruction of justice and perjury. His impeachment saga originated from a lawsuit filed against him by Paula Jones for sexual harassment while she worked as a state employee in 1991 in Arkansas. During this time, Clinton served as a governor of Arkansas.
Rhetorical Analysis: in Barbara Jordan’s “Statement on the Articles of Impeachment” In 1976, the first African American Congresswoman took the podium to address the political problems in the U.S. She used every form of document in the constitution to prove that things can change if they were followed accordingly. This courageous woman, Barbara Jordan, wrote “Statements on the Articles of Impeachment”, delivered July 25, 1974 to the House Judiciary Committee and argued that if the President was to participate in anything suspicious and kept the person safe, he may be impeached. Jordan builds her credibility with the evidence of Richard Nixon’s activity with several things beyond out of order; during her speech she was forcefully optimistic
In February, 1868 President Andrew Johnson was impeached by the House of Representatives, the Senate tried the case in a trial, which lasted from March to May 1868. During the Civil War the far-reaching Republicans wanted to give the African-Americans more freedom and rights that the conservative Republicans, both were on the side of the North. He was impeached for violating the “Tenure of Office Act”, which had been passed over Johnsons veto. It prohibited the president from dismissing certain federal official without the Senate approval, and for denouncing Congress as unfit to legislate. In 1867, President Johnson made an effort to test the constitutionality of the act by swapping Stanton with General Ulysses S. Grant.
The impeachment proceedings resumed during the post-election “lame duck” session of the 105th Congress. On Dec. 19, the House impeached Clinton of lying under oath and obstruction charges. Two other counts failed, including one accusing Clinton of abuse of power. Five Democrats (Virgil Goode of Virginia, Ralph Hall of Texas, Paul McHale of Pennsylvania, Charles Stenholm of Texas and Gene Taylor of Mississippi) voted in favor of three of the four articles of impeachment, but only Taylor voted for
On July 17, 1972, the Watergate hotel, the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, was broken into by five men. After being caught, it was found that these men carried top of the line surveillance equipment. It was also found that these men had ties to the committee to re-elect Nixon as President of the United States, and this discovery eventually led to the ironic impeachment of President Nixon. Although the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the break-in, it was Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, two common reporters from the Washington Post, who cracked this case wide open. This team, nicknamed Woodstein, went above and beyond, not only covering the break in, but traced why it occurred all the way up to the white house.
In 1976 Clinton became the attorney general of Arkansas. Two years later, he became the governor of Arkansas and he was also the youngest governor during 1978. He served 4 terms as Arkansas governor. When Bill Clinton was the governor of Arkansas, the state had one of the largest salary increase and at that time, Arkansas was almost ranked last on spending money on education. Bill Clinton became the 42nd U.S president on January 20, 1992.
Eventually, when Nixon went to trial the judge asked him to hand over the tapes there were parts missing, which showed the country that he was covering up something. These tapes would show that Nixon had acknowledgement of the break-in a week before it even happened. The judge ended up convicting Nixon with three felonies, federal crime, abusing presidential powers, and keeping evidence. Furthermore, Nixon was forced to resign from the presidential seat and handing over the seat to Gerald Ford, who is the only president to not be elected as president
Did you know he was the first president to ever get impeached? After he vetoed the “Freemans Bureau” bill, the members of Congress overthrew the veto and he was sent to court for impeachment. Apparently, he was found innocent and after he was removed from the presidency, he decided to get re-elected for the Senate. He completed 2 tasks before he got impeached.
The water gates scandal is why President Nixon was being impeached but he resigned before the house voted on the Articles hence Nixon was not impeached during the
The Constitution fastens the responsibility of trying impeachments upon the Senate. Yet some Senators have doubted whether they have the requisite competence to try impeachments . Rule XI was adopted as a response to poor attendance and preparation by Senators in impeachment trials in the early twentieth century. Yet even in the 1980s, some Senators claimed that they had not bothered to prepare before voting, and such proceedings diverted their energies away from legislative business of greater concern to their constituents. Others argued the proceedings restored their confidence in the Senate 's institutional competence to conduct them.
Finally, I would like to briefly touch upon the topic of impeachment. Impeachment is the removal or discrediting of a President before the end of term, this process is not easy for Congress and it is typically seen as the political equivalent of an indictment in Criminal Law. The House of Representatives may, by majority vote to impeach a president for “treason, bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors” and if that is what is decided it moves to the Senate to be tried by the Chief Justice of the Supreme
I think Barbara Jordan did a great job defining impeachment and clarifying its criteria. In her speech, Jordan discusses impeachment and states, “We know the nature of impeachment. We’ve been talking about it a while now. It is chiefly designed for the President and his high ministers to somehow be called into account. It is designed to “bridle” the Executive if he engages in excesses.
Bill Clinton was also an American politician who had served as the 42nd President of the United States. He had served his time from 1993 to 2001 and throughout his time in office, he had both aided yet negatively impacted the United States, which can be seen through many acts and bills he had signed, both domestic and foreign. Domestic accomplishments of President Clinton firstly included cutting the tax, similar to what Reagan had done. Clinton had signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, cutting taxes for millions of low-income families. He had also cut tax for almost 100% of small businesses and raised the tax on the wealthiest taxpayers.
Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. Jefferson was president from 1801-1809. One action Jefferson took was going to war with the Barbary pirates. Jefferson also made the Louisiana purchase.
Bill Clinton I Am Profoundly Sorry speech Partner Analyzing Essay An apology said right can bring forgiveness, said wrong can bring more remorse. Though it was effective, Bill Clinton's apology did not bring complete forgiveness. Bill Clinton’s remarkable “Profoundly Sorry” speech, which lead to the impeachment of the president, is effective because it uses repetition, ethos, and pathos.
Bill Clinton is known as one of the most powerful speakers in the United States, and he impresses his audience by his speeches and the rhetorical devices that he includes in his speeches and addresses. For example, he effectively delivers his inaugural address with a convincing tone and some of the rhetorical devices such as allusions and strong diction. In his 1993 inaugural address, Clinton discussed the issues that America faced in the 20th century such as health care costs and low wages. He mentioned that these issues are not solved because America has not “made changes” and made progress to solve the conflicts and restore the economy. Because of this, Clinton knew it was important to ensure that all of the nation was behind him, and if
