To survive in the wilderness all alone with no prior training and no supplies except for a hatchet for fifty-four days is quite an extraordinary feat. This is exactly what thirteen year old Brian Robeson from Gary Paulsen’s book Hatchet accomplishes. His plane crashes and he manages to stay alive against all odds. After roughly two months, he is rescued and taken back to civilization.

He was on his way to the airport to visit his dad, but the plane he was traveling in, crashed. This is how he was stuck in the unfamiliar forest. He had to adapt to his surroundings because he was native to the city, not the forest.

It soon loses signal, and Brian is now alone. He is forced to pilot the plane until it runs out of fuel. It is not long before the tank falls empty, and Brian proceeds to crash-land into a lake in the Canadian wilderness and is now stranded. After Brian crashes, he swims to shore and takes a brief rest after all he had recently been through.
