In the book Night, we the readers witness the hardships and struggles in Elie’s life during the traumatic holocaust. The events that take place in this story are unbearable and are thought to be demented in modern times. In the beginning Elie is shown as a normal teenage Jewish boy, but the events are so drastic that we the readers forget how he was like in the beginning. Changes were made to Elie during the book, whether they were minor or major. The changes generated from himself, the journey, and other people.

Elie’s father is a man who is very involved in his community. He is a person who is often sought after for advice, and he is a man who is respected by the Jews of Sighet. However, this has the adverse effect of driving him away from his family emotionally. Elie recalls how “[Shlomo] rarely displayed his feelings, not even within his family, and he is more involved in the welfare of others than that of his own kin” (4). He becomes more connected with the community, but his connection with his family suffers.

Decision Making by Elie in Night The decisions made by Elie Wiesel in the book Night both positively and negatively impacted his life. These were decisions that the author thought were best for him or for his mother, sister and father. However, the particular decisions made by the boy in Night affected his identity, innocence, and significantly changed his view of life during his experience in the holocaust.

World War II had been raging for two years and was bout to enter Sighet. The Germans attempted to commit genocide on the 'lesser ' races, particularly Jews. Through the brutality witnessed, acts of selfishness, the death of his father, and the loss of his faith, Elie changed. Elie became a young man with a strong sense of mortality through it all. By the end of the war, Elie claimed to see himself as "A corpse contemplating me."

The empathy he felt for his father is what drove him to stay alive, to fight for his life. Without his father, he would have given into exhaustion long before the American tanks arrived at the camp. Elie's father gave him strength, therefore giving him resilience. Strong people are resilient people; it took everything Elie had to keep himself alive. In the times he wanted so badly just to lie down, to give up it was his father's presence which kept him alive.

Elie shows this through the story when he writes about himself at just 15 years old wanting to be with his dad, when he wrote about Rabbi Eliahu, and when he wrote about his mother and sisters. One of the ways Elie showed the theme of the book was when he didn't leave his father's side during the entire book. “The ss officers were doing the selection the weak to the left those who walked well to the right. My father was sent to the left. I ran after him...”

Many books have the same themes and even some books have the same setting, ideas, or characters. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and Night by Elie Wiesel, both Liesel from The Book Thief and Elie for Night both share a common theme: suffering. Both Liesel and Elie suffer from the loss of their family. It is very hard on them since they have almost no one to depend on; they are by themselves essentially. Suffering is a major problem that both Liesel and Elie have to endure with in order to survive.

“Goodnight Saumensch” Rosa whispered. Saumensch means pig. Rosa just called her child a pig. Already at the beginning of the “The Book Thief”, not only does the reader see Liesel suffocate in the cruel words of her mother, but we also see her avoid any situation that could ignite Rosa’s abusive side. As soon as Max arrived in Liesel’s home there was a sudden shift in Rosa’s feelings and her concern for Max’s safety and Liesel’s sanity was evident as she terminated practically all of her abusive ways.

After Elie’s father dies, Elie is a little bit glad because the responsibility is off him, “And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!?” Elie will certainly miss his father because they were very close. Yet part of Elie is glad to have the stress and responsibility off him. Elie is a little bit selfish in this, that he does not care that his father is dead, but he is a little bit relieved. The Book Thief In times of hardships people look into others for support to help them overcome the hardships life presents. In the novel “The Book Thief” Markus Zusak shows how characters in the novel help each other cope and survive the harsh realities of life through sacrificing safety and by creating distractions. In the novel characters sacrifice safety to help others in need during times of hardships. Characters sacrifice the safety of family to aid others in times of struggle.
