In a New York Times article titled “Why Student Athletes Continue to Fail”, published in April 2015 by Daniel Openheimer, it says that universities like UNC that are part of the NCAA offer classes for athletes that are “no show” classes, where no work is required but they are given good grades. This is not just at UNC but many division one schools are allowing this to happen, as well as breaking academic ineligibility rules, and committing other types of academic fraud. If this is happening, then after their athletic careers are over, their education is invalidated. Oppenheimer also goes on to describe a survey taken where student athletes inwardly rank academics as more important than sports, but they all believe that their teammates hold sports to be more important. Kids love sports, if kids like sports and sports are in school, they will want to stay in school. This means that barely any kids will drop out of school. Also, kids will live happy if they know that they will be playing sports for free. What if some kids want to play sports but they can't? That is not the only thing, last year high schools had it that you had to have a D letter grade average to play sports they then boosted it up so that you have to have a C letter grade average to participate in sports. From demanding school schedules to overbearing parents, study halls may be a gateway to better grades, and more focused confident students. Surrounded by their peers, study halls would push students to work harder and accomplish their long-term goals. Study halls may be time consuming and non-essential for some students that may need an extra credit, or more time with a teacher. In some cases, a study hall may also cause disruptions in classes and off task students.

These students easily qualify for study hall because one can assume they have a lot of work due to the rigorous courses they’re taking. In the same way, our survey also shows that 34.7% of students take more than 2 hours to do homework. As a result, s students taking higher level classes needs more time to do homework because they have so much work to do in so little time. The remaining students that don´t have many or any AP, dual credit, or honors classes or grades lower than a B, can still apply for study hall; they would just have to write a 2 page essay as to why they would want that class. People hate to fail, no matter what it is or how much their failing by. So the fear of failing a grade only to repeat it next year is extremely motivating, and will force students to strive to be their absolute best. Discipline would also increase due to more focus, and attendance would be at an alltime high because students would now know the severity of their actions. Both the letter/grading and pass/fail systems say the exact same thing. The letter/number system requires extra work in order to state if a student is passing or failing.
