The US notes 1.8 video mainly focused on the change that occurred during the progressive era, and why it was so important. It described the difference between Gilded Age presidents, that employed laissez-faire, and the progressive presidents. During the Gilded Age, the government left supporting the economy to companies. The government usually stayed out of economic issues, except when labor unions threatened companies, where the government supported the companies over the workers. During this period, corruption was also a major issue because of the spoils system that was in place. The spoils system, or patronage, gave political supporters the opportunity to take well-paying jobs in the government that most were unqualified for. The video …show more content…
They failed to end poverty in cities, the Republican party lost power after being split, and they neglected to pay attention to the issue of race. The NAACP was formed in the Niagara Movement because since the government was not listening to them they had to do something about it themselves. The Gentleman’s Agreement was also a bad idea because it restricted Japanese people from gaining citizenship which angered Japan. One final failure would be the prohibition failure that not only did nothing to stop crime but also possibly increased …show more content…
The government went from being involved in almost nothing to being involved with many economic and social issues. I learned just how influential each president was as well as how that has affected American society today. Nowadays we have higher expectations for the government because during the progressive era the government started to become more involved in the lives of American citizens in order to protect and help them. Because of this, now we know that our working rights will be protected, unlike those before the progressive
Supporters of the spoils system believed that the appointed officeholders would help the elected official carry out his policies and fulfill his campaign promises. On the other hand, this system was abused and the
Prior to the progressive era, the United States had great economy condition in the area. During the progressive era, the depression of 1920s emerged where people lost jobs, homes, and people struggle to provide food for their families. In fact, President Calvin Coolidge did not help people to come out of the great depression. Moreover, he rejected to help people to end the depression. President Coolidge believed in the capitalism and therefore, he did not take more action to end the great depression.
Despite some issues, The Gilded Age, or Industrial era, overall had a great impact on America. During this time, the economy saw a great increase, people were given new opportunities such as jobs, and the popularity of America increased globally. I really enjoyed watching "The Gilded Age", and found it very educational. I found the meaning of the name of the documentary interesting, the fact that America put off this image that they were perfect but behind the image were various issues. I guess you could say this proves to never judge a book by its cover.
In all this time would shape the current economic state of our government as the republican party came into power. We became one of the strongest nations in the world at the price of the welfare of the american people. As the benefactors of most of these events were the 1% of the wealth of the country and politicians. We can learn from this time now because we can see the underlying effects to our government and prevent them from happening in the
As a result of the New Deal, unemployment and poverty levels lowered alongside the economic difficulties of the American people. During the New Deal era, the legislation raised government spending and regulation to new heights strengthening the government's control over the economy. One can only imagine how the economic state of the U.S. would have been if not for the fierce opposition and disregard for the real issues at hand led by the Republican Party. Change could have came at a quicker pace but sometimes the best things for the country will always be the hardest to achieve. Regardless of what happened, progress was advanced and prosperity was beginning to impact the U.S. citizens on a greater scale.
The Industrial Revolution brought many advancements in technology and the economy. However, it also uncovered many issues for the working class, ones that ran dominant and unchecked during the Gilded Age. The mindset of the American working population also began to develop in their mindset to question and fight against the conditions they were forced to endure. Progressives headed the movement, bring on their own era of change and justice. The transition and duration of the Gilded Age to Progressive Era brought many adaptations to worker’s rights and regulations in the workplace.
The end of the reconstruction era gave rise to the gilded age. The gilded age was a time of economic growth. It was the second industrial revolution, urbanization, immigration and political/economic corruption. The congress and the big business were more influential than the presidency. The term ‘Gilded Age’ was termed by Mark Twain who described the wealthy who were covered in a ‘layer of gold’, a superficial layer can be peeled and reveals unpleasant things.
The progressive era was very important because it helped America be better by allowing equal rights, treating people better, and making everyone a better person. First of all, the progressive era was important in America's history because it helped America become a better country. Consumption was one bad thing during that time period because people were spending too much money on alcohol and it was very bad for their health. Citizens also noticed that kids and workers were being worked more than usual in harsh environments.
The Gilded Age, the period of the history of the United States from the Reconstruction to the early 20th century, witnessed the development of industrialization, urbanization, the construction of great transcontinental railroads, innovations in science and technology, and the rise of big business. There were many capable leaders who were building a better future. Vanderbilt stopped at nothing to connect the nation via railroads. Rockefeller used his trademark ruthlessness to establish his oil empire. Cities were expending to the sky, this was built on the strength of Andrew Carnegie’s steel.
Corporate greedy and corrupt politicians were specific problems and injustices that were present in American life during the late 1800s and early 1900s however these were addressed during the progressive era with laws and regulations. Throughout the gilded era corrupt politicians and corporate greedy allowed the upper class and businessmen to take advantage of the working class. This means that a majority of the population were hurt during the gilded age whereas a small percentage benefitted. As seen in document 1, living conditions were crowded, dirty, and unsafe.
The Gilded Age lasted from 1870-1900 The Gilded Age, which spanned the final three decades of the nineteenth century, was one of the most dynamic, contentious, and volatile periods in American history. America's industrial economy exploded, generating unprecedented opportunities for individuals to build great fortunes but also leaving many farmers and workers struggling merely for survival. Overall national wealth increased more than fivefold, a staggering increase, but one that was accompanied by what many saw as an equally staggering disparity between the rich and the poor. Industrial giants like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller revolutionized business and ushered in the modern corporate economy, but also, ironically, sometimes destroyed
The British government was not looking for the best of the people. They were only thinking about what they wanted; the government was not interested in what the people wanted so they decided to make decisions on their own, which resulted in changes that form the United States today. Because of this, they were justified in rebelling and declaring independence. One reason why the colonists decided to rebel and declare independence was because of taxation.
3. The American people began to embrace the role of government during the progressive era to address poverty, poor health, violence, greed, racism, and class warfare. The American people came to understand that government was best positioned to improve education for regular Americans, protect them from street gangs and mobsters, ensure that that the workplace was safe, and that government was not rampant with corruption. As example, the FDA was created during the progressive era because of horrible things happening in the meat industry during this period in American
During the Progressive Era there were multiple of changes occurring that people became overwhelmed. New resources in the oil market, industrialization, fights for equality. There were many factory jobs, however, no one to stand up for the workers. So of course people will turn to their government for help, the power house of the country. However, even the government was picky in what they helped with.
President Woodrow Wilson was the last of the Progressive Presidents and as such caused great economic, political and social change. He served between 1913 and 1921 during which he imposed economic change through reforms, both national and international political change and a change in the role of women, giving them the right to vote. The effects of Wilsons presidency created abundant change within American society that had long lasting impacts. Political change was imminent in Wilsons second term as he was given emergency presidential power to, in some cases, bypass Congress, to speed up the law-making process. For example, he imposed the Selective Services Act in 1917 which authorised conscription in the US so that the military could be built up quickly and would not have to rely wholly on volunteers; according to Khan Academy this was well received by the American public as they were incredibly patriotic and believed it was their responsibility to support their nation, as such few men dodged.
