The hardships in A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park are terrible real life experiences in the Southern Sudan area. Salva is an eleven year old boy in this story, he was born and raised in Southern Sudan in Loun Arrick. Salva has multiple siblings including three brothers and three sisters. In this book he faces hardships like a raging war, a lack of water, and not being able to find his food.
This hardship is the raging war of Southern Sudan. In the beginning of the story Salva, an eleven year old boy is sitting in school when he hears a cracking sound. His classmates look out of the window while the cracking is getting closer, gunshots hit the school. His teacher issues everyone to get down. When they get out of the classroom to the outside, he tells everyone to run into the bush and to not stop running. Salva listens and runs into the bush. The group walked until they were overflowing with people, the group was thin on food and they thought Salva was the main problem. The group thought Salva would slow them down, so they continued walking until they found a barn. They slept in the barn overnight. When Salva woke up he found that the group left him behind, he knew why they left him. The group left him because he was a kid. Salva went out of the barn and traveled to the nearby pond. While reaching the pond he stumbles across a house. There was a woman sitting on the porch, Salva noticed scars on her head. The woman he saw was a Dinka. He walked up and introduced himself, she was welcoming and had Salva do work once they knew each other. When he was working a group came by running from war, the women asked if they could take Salva with them. Salva was given a bag of peanuts and a gourd and was sent with the group. On this journey of running from war he lost his group of people that are Dinka’s that he was with and stayed in a barn with a woman. He also couldn’t find any of his family at this hard time but when he found a new group of Dinka’s to stay with Salva had found his Uncle. He also made a really good friend. Until they both died and Salva was by himself again with nobody he knew. Some hardships that Salva faced during this time in A Long Walk to Water were lots of water problems, wild animals, and no family.
One days, Salva uncle decided to return back to the refugee camps in Sudan to fight. But before he get to the camps he was killed. Salva and others people move to a new camps. It’s not easy to get into new camps because they are in war zone. When they go to the new camp they don’t have enough food so they were so hungry and tried.
A joyful reunion with his father inspires Salva to bring hope and harmony to the people of Sudan in the form of water. With a lot of work and so much help from other people, he finally could bring new life to his country, especially to his people. He felt so thankful for the success of his project “Water to Sudan”.
When Salva was walking with the only family he had, his uncle, they got robbed. The robbers captured his uncle and shot him right before Slava’s eyes (63). That tragic event would leave most people in shambles, but Salva, he kept going. Salva and Nya went through many hardships but they never let that get in their way. In South Sudan around 2 million people died and this time period was considered a genocide. Salva was one of the many people that were struggling during this period of time. “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, is a book about how Salva had to leave his home and family due to a war, he was joined by people along the way of his journey, but really only had himself as support and motivation to keep going and not give up despite how hard it was. Salve faced many hardships during his youth including crossing the Akobo desert, crossing rivers, and never having clean water. Salva and almost all of Sudan had no easy access to water, people had to walk for hours on end just to get dirty water.
As he runs away, he lacks water and shelter and depends on his life skills to get by. War occurs in South Sudan, and Salva Dut has to run away from his village and family to remain safe. As a "lost boy" refugee, he must journey on foot across Africa, searching for his family and safety. After surviving three refugee camps, Salva has been allowed to escape the war for a lifetime. Because many of the camps he stayed in were closed, Salva had to travel to other camps.
Salva gets water and does housework for the old woman he considers family. In the text it states “He worked hard so she would not send him away.” (18) Salva worked hard, to have a place to stay during the fighting.
