Imagine for a moment if you will. A woman in her 50’s sitting in a recliner on a hot July day with the windows closed, blinds drawn with the heat on. She is dressed in layers, covered in blankets. She is freezing in July. She has her sister put a few ice chips in her mouth so they will melt slowly. She will not drink anything in fear of vomiting. She has not eaten in days. The smell of food makes her nauseated. Yet she craves a milkshake. She sits in her recliner twitching in pain as a few tears gently run down her face. It hurts too much to move. She is given pain medicine every four hours. It does not help. She second guesses having chemotherapy. Medical marijuana can enhance an individual’s quality of life. But the financial benefits of legalization go beyond taxing the sale of marijuana and keeping drug money out of the hands of criminals. All across the nation, wherever the drug is illegal, state and local governments spend enormous sums of money on the enforcement of marijuana laws, the prosecution of offenders, and incarceration of the convicted. The Wall Street Journal estimates that the American taxpayer spends $40 billion per year on the administrative costs associated with the criminalization of marijuana (Becker). On the state level, we can again look to the example of Colorado. Conservative estimates by the Colorado Center on Law and Policy show that legalization will save the state $40 million per year by no longer administering marijuana laws (Drug Policy Alliance).
More than half of Americans are in favor of marijuana legalization, and it has already been made legal in some states. It is a good idea to legalize medical marijuana. The other side of medical marijuana legalization is that it is detrimental to youth and users. Less than half of Americans believe that the use of medical marijuana is not beneficial medically. Many people believe that marijuana is a gateway drug and that the medical use will be abused and that people will become addicted to marijuana.

If marijuana is regulated and taxed properly, it can generate millions of dollars that can help pay the debt of the US and/or help cities rebuild a better infrastructure. Marijuana has become the third most popular drug in the US behind alcohol and tobacco. It is a renewable resource and is not just used for smoking; it can be used to make paper, oils, and cloth. Every year millions of tax dollars are being spent to enforce marijuana laws. If these laws were repealed and marijuana was legalized, we would not only make money from the marijuana, but we would also be using a lot less money to enforce marijuana laws.
