Summary In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete” the author Jessica Statsky argues that the contact sports like tackle ball and peewee football have damaging effects on children. She holds a strong opinion that the children sports should be about teaching them sportsmanship and teamwork. She says that the sports that focus on winning either induce either the fear of losing or the fear of getting hurt. This causes the children to avoid playing. These sports also exert great pressures on the mind and body of the children. The author says that competitive sports become a job rather than a fun activity for children. As the focus of these sports is entirely winning, many children are devoid of playing due to lack of the skills. This enforces immense …show more content…
Children don’t tend to perform well in the field due to this pressure. I can relate to this idea as I have experienced this in my life once. My parents had high hopes for my brother. Once, on the day of the final match, my dad told him that he was sure to win and nothing could defeat him and his team. My brother got so much under pressure that he fainted before the game even started. As a result, the coach had to withdraw him from the game. I agree with the author that such pressures can affect the health of a child. Therefore, the sports should not be about exerting such pressures rather they should be about improving a child’s health. The author puts forth the idea that the through drills and the training schedules make sports a ‘job-like’ activity for the children. I agree with her point of view because the fun is eliminated and all that is left are the strict rules that have to be followed. Children sports should focus on letting children have fun with their fellow mates rather than making it a duty for them to perform every day. In conclusion, I agree with the author that children sports need to be amended. These need to focus more on letting the children be and polish their individual skills rather than eliminating the weak ones and selecting the stronger ones to play. The sports must be used as a medium to make the children more healthy and physically and psychological
As the writer explains the organized sports have many negative effects on a child’s development and growth. The way Statsky explains her ideas on the basis of facts and examples that it is hard to overlook them. Sports activities are designed to promote teamwork and cooperation but if adult standards are imposed on a child it might ruin the physical health as well as affect the child mentally. The basic aim of sports is to encourage the teamwork spirit and to emphasize fitness, self-esteem, and sportsmanship but if the children are forced to follow the adult principles they may hurt themselves physically and psychologically.
In “Do Sports Build Character or Damage it?” Mark Edmundson explains the pros and cons of children who grow up playing football. Firstly, he believes the perseverance it takes to show up for hard practices is useful later in life. Especially when they get frustrated with something and don’t notice the little bits of progress they are making.

These not only influence their physical health but also deteriorate their psychological health. The author is also of the view that the high hopes of parents and coaches need to be lowered as well. These burdening high expectations can cause trouble to the innocent mind of the child. The author also claims that the rules,
Although she may not be famous she is still credible in a way, because she uses credible sources to backup her claim on why it is not good for children to be exposed to competitiveness at a young age. However, Jessica Statsky is not fully credible since she is only a college student writing about why people should not support children playing competitive sports at a young age. In “Children Need To Play, Not Compete” Statsky writes about how it is unhealthy to put children in at adult standards in relation to competitiveness.

Summary In “Children Need to Play, Not Compete,” Jessica Statsky tries to demonstrate the negative effect of organized sports on the physical and psychological health of growing child. She claims that the games are not festive but they end up in the wrong development of a child’s brain. The coaches and parents have high hopes for their children that result in the pressure building. This changes the purpose of sports from teaching tolerance, teamwork and sportsmanship to merely winning by all means.
Competitive sports provide a community which kids can work with and beat other teams with. “Playing a sport helps children develop social skills which would benefit them even when they grow older. Playing sports teaches them about teamwork and cooperating with others. They learn to interact with people from different ages” (Mahaseth). When these kids grow up, they can use these skills to be able to cooperate and talk with their colleagues.
Skeptics have been arguing whether kids should or should not compete in competitive sports. Many kids around the world already play competitive sports to begin with. Three out of four American families have one school-aged child that plays an organized sport, which is a total of 45 million kids (Atkinson). Competitive sports is also very beneficial. “Playing a sport can help children to better at school work”(“Sport For Children”).
