Would you have the courage to leave your home friends and family to go off on an important mission? You would not know where you are going or who will be there, but in the case of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the reward was worth the risk. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were part of the Corps of Discovery which comprised a select group of US Army volunteers. This expedition was commissioned by Thomas Jefferson soon after the Louisiana Purchase. They explored and mapped what is now the Western part of the United States. The expedition took place in 1804 and lasted through 1806 and included details on what we know as the Pacific Northwest for the United States. They had to deal with wicked temperatures, horrible mosquitos, …show more content…
With maps, sketches and by keeping journals, they detailed all that they saw to document for the United States Government on their new territories. This is a very well know and a very well documented journey. President Jefferson assigned this team of men to accomplish this task and journey and their journals can be found in the archives in the United States. I feel Lewis and Clark made a huge sacrifice in making the journey across the Western part of the United states. Thomas
Jefferson had dreamt of sending explorers across North America and had trust in Lewis and Clark to accomplish this mission/dream. Their mission was full of danger which included many meetings with native american tribes. Not all treaties and meetings were peaceful, there were many times the team were at risk of wars with a few factions of warring tribes. They were lucky enough to meet a French-Canadian fur trapper named Toussaint Charbonneau and his wife Shoshone Sacagawea. They served as the expedition’s translators and guides. Their travels with sacajawea were cited in coin replicas and currency. Many paintings can be found in several museums throughout the west. Lewis and Clark wouldn’t have accomplished this huge and death threatening mission without the help of Toussaint Charbonneau and his wife Shoshone Sacagawea. But Sacagawea was one of the biggest parts of their
The book “ The Journal of Augustus Pelletier “ by Kathryn Lasky is about The Lewis and CLark expedition. Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark want Augustus Pelletier to be one of their men and help them out, to seek for new territories. As Augustus Pelletier did go to help Captains Lewis and William. He saw many Indians, one named Sacajawea who helped them guide them through the new land for them. On May 21, 1804, Augustus Pelletier makes a choice and follows Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, Corps Of Discovery.
Lewis and Clark were the exploring duo that made history in the exploration of America. With the help from their entourage, Sacagawea, and others they successful explored the land President Jefferson purchased known as the Louisiana Purchase. The territories of Louisiana offered more than just the new areas but a hope for ways around North America`s coast. Meriwether Lewis was an explorer and solider born August 18,1774 near Ivy, Virginia. He grew up on Locust Hill plantation neighboring Monticello where Jefferson lived.
Lewis and Clark’s Expedition To many Americans, the Lewis and Clark expedition was fundamental in discovering the vastness that lay beyond the Mississippi River. Lewis and Clark discovered new things and paved the way for many settlements. Along their journey, they encountered indians, new regions, and wildlife they had never seen before.
They had about thirty-four people in their exploration when they started but when they ended the exploration they had about twenty-seven people. Lewis and Clark travelled through ten states and went back through all ten states. When the Spanish heard about Lewis and Clark and their exploration they tried to arrest them because the Spanish were worried about Lewis and Clark taking the Spanish’s land. Clark was a devoted family man and a valued friend.
“The Lewis and Clark Expedition paddled its way down the Ohio as it prepared the Expedition to be launched officially from Camp Wood, just outside St. Louis, in the summer of 1804” (2), and the Corps of Discovery’s official mission would commence near the outskirts of St. Louis in 1804 where they would move upstream of the Missouri River to a place called Fart Mandan that was used at a trading post where they would wait out the winter. The Corps were tested with several bumps in the road that would slow and threatened the journey like the insects they would encounter, heat they would have to endure and injuries that were unavoidable given the working conditions they were under. There was a man by the name of Charles Floyd, that Lewis and Clark liked the most out of the crew, died of what was labeled as his appendix bursting and was “the only person to die on the two and one-half year journey.” As they continued forward in their quest they eventually make it to a village inhabited by the Mandan Indians whom belonged to a large trade network in the West. This is where they recruited a Frenchman by the name of Toussaint Charbonneau, that they would use as a means of translation between their current
The Lewis and Clark expedition is arguably the most courageous and adventurous exploration effort ever made in American history. The Lewis and Clark took place after the Louisiana Purchase as an effort to find a northwest passage, map the newly purchased land, make scientific discoveries in the area, and to establish contact with the natives and set up a strong trade network with them. Through efforts of Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Sacagawea, and many others, the United states was radically changed through the exploration of these new uncharted areas. The Lewis and Clark exploration would not have been possible without Thomas Jefferson's monumental purchase of the Louisiana Territory. Due to the United States westward
The United States would not be what it is today without the Lewis and Clark Expedition. People may not have known it at the time, but the Lewis and Clark Expedition was the start for many things. On the expedition many things were discovered. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark brought to light many things that were previously unknown to Americans. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were appointed by President Thomas Jefferson to lead the expedition.
Lewis chose a good friend of his, William Clark, to help out and decided Clark should be the commander of the journey. Their expedition began in May, 1804 near St. Louis, Missouri. They went through many hardships such as harsh weather, illnesses, rough waters, starvation, and injuries. Throughout their expedition, Lewis kept a journal and collected samples of plants and animals he came across. They finally reached the Pacific Ocean in November, 1805, and spent that winter in Oregon.
After studying astronomy, map-making, and other survival skills Meriwether made for the perfect explorer candidate. Lewis asked William Clark, a friend he made in army, to co-captain this journey with him. In mid-October Lewis and Clark made the final preparations in Clarksville, Indiana territory. It is here that they assembled the team that would accompany them on this trip. This team that was composed of Native American experts and men who were familiar with upper Missouri.
From 1804-1806, the Corps of Discovery embarked on a journey that would take them through thick forests, across dangerously fast rivers, and up into the highest regions of the country. The most famous members, Lewis and Clark, led the expedition, along with the help of many others, including a Native American woman named Sacagawea. They scouted and mapped the area, taking notes and naming regions that would later be populated by thousands of pioneers that would immigrate into the area. Their efforts towards exploration proved successful and allowed the U.S. to gain detailed information of their newly acquired land. Within American history, a number of individuals have reached greatness, yet only a few have ever been appreciated and recognized
Members chosen for the expedition were sought after for skills that included hunting, blacksmithing, and gunsmithing, making United States Army soldiers a good option for crew who traveled by land, water and horseback, for nearly 8,000 miles over mountains, through plains and by rivers (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The success of the Lewis and Clark expedition was important to science, as they made important observations about the land of North America that lead to creation of maps with Captain Clark having the duty of mapping the landscape because of his experience: the result of maps made by Clark became one of the most important achievements of the western exploration. (The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 2016). The scientific information collected on geography, meteorology, cultures, and animal life and plant life were greatly important to the nation (Corps of Discover, 2016). The trip also was partially useful in creating peaceful relations with the American Indians in territories of the Northwest, although not all tribes were accepting of the gestures, giving gifts was important to building peaceful relationships with the American Indians (The Corp of Discovery, 2016).
Lewis & Clark Expedition (June 20, 1803): Jefferson charters the Lewis and Clark expedition—led by his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis—to survey the new Louisiana Territory, establish friendly relations with the American Indian tribes living inland, and search for a Northwest Passage allowing easy travel to the Pacific.
