Paper Two Fredrick Douglass’ essay “Learning to Read and Write” narrated how he accomplished to teach himself how to read and write. Maneuvering through many obstacles, he managed to use his advantages to learn. He talks about his struggles and the hard ships he went through at a young age to lead him to where he is now. I agree with Douglass’ main point in the essay being how hard it was for him to learn. He gives clear examples of how being a slave and wanting to learn was very hard back in them 1800’s.

Frederick Douglass wrote the article “Learning to Read and Write”. Douglass was a slave trying to learn to read and write. Douglass talks about how he was successful in learning to read and write, for him to carry out this, he had to resort to different strategies. Douglass was making friends of all the boys, he traded bread for knowledge, he didn’t give them up when they helped him with learning to read and write, so then Douglass and the boys would talk to each other about how they wish to be free. The book Columbian Orator was used in schoolrooms in the nineteenth century to learn how to read and speak, it also taught people how to read and write, it was a big part of Douglass’ plan to learn to read and write.

Never giving up and never accepting defeat is what it means to be indefatigable. Frederick Douglass is a prime example of someone who is indefatigable. Despite his hardships Frederick Douglass never gave up. Indefatigability defines My Bondage and My Freedom because Douglass never accepted defeat in his goal to learn to read.

Douglass was more educated than any other black man of his time, simply due to the fact that it was illegal for colored men to learn to read. Yet, Douglass’s rise to popularity was unprecedented. He orated on a circuit to small groups of abolitionists, and eventually rose to be an advisor to President Lincoln during the Civil War. All this from a former runaway slave. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s, Dr. King Jr. used a page out of Douglass’s book, but this time, he had the previous black protestors to refer to.

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, otherwise known as Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist, writer, orator, statesman, and social reformer for African Americans all over. As a slave, he learned how to read and write through fellow people that were in his neighborhood and his plantation owner’s wife. Some say that him learning these two essentials was the start of his political movement to the road of freedom. It was almost as the more he read, the more his ambition and determination leveled up to end slavery. He began to use his new develop skills and put to work some of the greatest writings that has ever hit history.

Frederick Douglass, a historic civil rights activist, was born into slavery and fortunately lived long enough to see it end. He may have outlived the enslavement however, equality and direct freedom was not a result of Americanized slavery’s extinction. Douglass lived his post slavery life during the time of Jim Crow laws, enforced segregation laws. He wrote a letter to an unknown recipient, briefing describing the negative impact these laws had on blacks. Although slavery was abolished, it was believed that the act on dominance still played a big part on how whites treated blacks and still does today.

White Privilege in America Recently in America racial tension has increased because events that’s have been occurring across the country. Across the United States (U.S.) black men have been killed by law enforcement and this has sparked protest in its aftermath. The media has started to give more time to these problems so more Americans have learned about them. This has started a conversation on different social issues that include the dominant culture, social privilege in the U.S. As a young black man this has affected me directly.

In dialogue about race issues within the United States, one controversial issue has been about systemic racism towards people of colour, in particular, black americans. On one hand, Ralph Ellison, a recent predecessor to our present time argues that no matter what the future holds, people will judge others based on their association, their image, which will. In relation, a modern black activist group, Black Lives Matter, argues that even though change has come to America race relations, black people are still endangered by the system.

He narrates a personal story about the path he takes to understand the effects of his appearance and how it also affects his environment around him. In the essay, Staples describes how he has always been discriminated. This was first realized as a young graduate student when he takes a walk one evening and frightens a white woman who believed he was following her.

In the poem “Harlem” by Langston Hughes, several similes are used to portray the reality of dreams. Hughes employs effective metaphors, inviting us to visualize a dream and what may happen to it after it passes from conscious thought. Could a dream dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or even fester like a sore? (Hughes, 1951, p. 631).

The revolutionary Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr, once described discrimination as “a hellbound that gnaws at Negroes in every waking moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is accepted as truth in the society dominating them.” His point being that African Americans face racial discrimination on a daily basis. Brent Staples, being an African American living in America, expresses his view on the subject in his essay “Just Walk on By”, where he conveys the message of how fear is influenced by society's stereotypical and discriminating views of certain groups of people; his point is made clear through his sympathetic persona, descriptive diction, depressing tone, and many analogies. Staples sympathetic persona helps the reader feel and understand the racial problems that he experiences daily.

One report shows that, ‘’In 1995, average white households had $18,000 in financial wealth, while Black households possessed a total of only $200’’(‘’International Socialist Review’’) Just as we saw when talking about the gender inequality, people of certain, ‘’undesirable,’’ races can be subjected to unequal pay, due to racist, and bias bosses. Skin is only so deep, so we have to ask ourselves: Should color determine how others treat ? If so, we can then start to understand why America won’t ever be completely
