Complicated Simplicity Trained professionals, armed with microscopes and overwhelming skill, could not find the purloined letter anywhere. Conversely, though it only rested in a card-rack, an obvious hiding spot. Edgar Allen Poe wrote “The Purloined Letter” in 1844. In this story, the Prefect of the Police asks the detective Dupin for aid in solving a perplexing case, in which the Minister steals a letter of value from a woman and hides it somewhere in his hotel, planning to blackmail the victim. Through the themes of trickery, logic, and power, complex schemes appear simple, while simplicity transforms into a bafflement only the brilliant Dupin can solve. The Minister used trickery to obtain power over the woman, but got tricked in return. Using a trap, …show more content…
She “saw, but, of course, dared not call attention to the act, in the presence of the third personage who stood at her elbow,” (Poe 93-94.) Then, the Minister fooled the police, who could not find the letter because he placed it in an obvious spot they would overlook, for “had the letter been deposited within the range of their search, these fellows would, beyond a question, have found it,” (Poe 99.) Nevertheless, all this deception did not pass by Dupin, so he fooled the Minister into the most impressive trick yet, and took the letter right out from under his nose. Slyness abounds and creates the confusing case Dupin solves easily. Similarly, Dupin uses logic to outwit the Minister, who uses the same reasoning to try to make the purloined letter undetectable so he could continue profiting from his crime. The thief almost succeeded because the experienced police took “it for granted that all men proceed
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. He was an American writer, critic and editor but was best known for his poems and short stories. At a young age, Edgar grew up to rough circumstances. Poe’s mother was a teenage widow when she married David Poe, and Edgar was their second son. Poe’s father had a fairly good reputation as an actor, but he had an even wider reputation as an alcoholic.
In King’s letter from Birmingham, he concludes his 50 paragraph letter by using specific rhetorical strategies in order to connect himself to the clergymen to whom he writes by shifting his tone from the disturbed and excited writing in the rest of the letter to one that is calm and composed toward his current situation in jail, and also by using more positive imagery and language. His attitude immediately changes in these closing three paragraphs in an attempt to assure the clergymen that he is reasonable in all his assertions, even asking for forgiveness for any over- or understated claims, apologizing for ever straying from the path of truth and patience, and he also asks “God to forgive [him]” (para. 49). After this last sentence of paragraph

Deception can be used as a noble shield to protect someone from a hideous truth that can be to their undoing, or it can be a means of intentionally destroying someone; destroying their happiness, their trust, and their peace with the vile vice that is deception. How can the motive for the deception be determined? A straightforward answer is rarely available, and it must be something that the reader decides for him or herself. By examining specific evidence, a conclusion can be drawn about one’s character. Jane Eyre is the subject here.

He goes “boldly” into the chamber, “cunningly” sticks his head in the doorway and feels “the extent of his own power”. Poe’s use of diction shows how cocky the man actually is.
