Confederation Problems

Canada was not always as large of a country as it is now. It started with just two parts, the West and the East. Have you ever wondered how it all started or who was the first prime minister of the country? Perhaps you were wondering what colonies did not want to join the confederation.

The first government in the U.S. was called the Articles of Confederation. It was the first set of laws after the states became independent. The laws in the Confederation were very weak, and they all contracted each other. It also had a weak central/national government because the states didn’t want to give it too much power like the monarchy with the British. Some weaknesses in the first government were that each state no matter how big or small had only one vote, each state could coin its own money, making it hard to move, and lastly, they could not have a military so it would be hard to fight armed rebellions or militias.

Their first attempt at a government didn’t go well, the Articles of Confederation served as the written document that established the functions of the national government of the United States after it declared independence

Once the American Revolution had ended, America required a new form of government to happen. November of 1777, the Continental Congress accepted the first American Constitution known as the Articles of Confederation. Shortly after the Articles were confirmed by the states in 1781, multiple problems started to arise that provided the United States with an ineffective government from 1781 all the way to 1789. They were not able to address any of the problems dealing with the American Nation due to the lacking features of the government under the Articles. Moreover, the Articles presented each state with too much power that lead to a loose confederation creating a limited power to the central government.

In 1781, The Articles of Confederation was created and became the first United States Constitution. It created the first government structure for the 13 colonies. Some of the flaws were that Congress did not have the power to tax, regulate trade, there was no national court system, in Congress, each state only had one vote, and any changes to the Articles of Confederation required a unanimous vote, no common currency. The U.S. had to replace it because the states were arguing amongst themselves and their needed to be some form of unity. Many of the stated also did not want to help the national government financially.

The Articles of Confederation were the first document created after the American Revolution. The Articles of Confederation were problematic for the nation because they gave to much power to the states. For instance, the articles did not include a central banking system, no executive, legislative, nor judicial branch of federal government. Therefore, the power of the country resided in the states, and this lead to an ambiguous nation with no stability. For example, some states were creating their own money and negotiated deals with other countries that did not include all the other states.

The Articles of Confederation is the first written laws of the United States, “Article I The style of this confederacy shall be, “The United States of America.” The original thirteen states sought to create a governing law that would allow the states to maintain their freedom and independents, allowing Congress to have the final say in political disputes between states. Congress was appointed the governing body, having authority on foreign matters, trade agreements, forging alliances and overseeing the military. Missing from the Articles of Confederation was the making of a judicial governing body.

The Articles of Confederation failed because the articles offered no solutions. Many of these issues did not propose innovation and were primarily conservative providing each state with its own autonomy with minimal influence by the federal government (Schultz, n.d.). This led to multiple disagreements between each state, with each state viewing its own power as a priority over the unity of the Confederation. This created multiple weaknesses within the articles, which includes the following (Articles of Confederation, 2018). Each state, regardless of its size, only had one vote in Congress.

The Articles of Confederation was the first American constitution. The Articles was a form of government that had strong state government and a weak central government. This form of government was extremely flawed due to the lack of power in the central government. The power of the national government was limited in the Articles of Confederation. The U.S Constitution has three branches of government, a Legislature branch, and Executive branch, and a Judiciary branch.

With the Declaration of Independence in 1776, The United States came into existence, and began to establish the role of the new federal government in the fledgling country’s operation and control. The first document that established the role of the federal government was the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation were written such that the federal government had very weak powers, as the states were wary of ceding too much control that they had just fought to win. The federal government did not have the power to levy taxes, or impose laws upon the states; it only had the power to negotiate agreements with foreign governments and to decide disputes between the states.

The Articles of Confederation were a document seen as the “first” constitution of the United States. This document granted the new national government power to control the military, declare war, and create treaties between the states. However, the Articles had holes in it considering the government did not have the power to tax, create laws without at least nine states’ approval, or change the Articles of Confederation without a unanimous vote. This means that the country soon fell into debt and petty arguments between state, the new government had no control. It was time for a change.

The Articles of the Confederation was the first form of government created by the Continental Congress, which developed an alliance between the thirteen states. Congress was a single-chamber legislature which allowed for each state to possess the same amount of authority no matter the size of the community. The Constitution

By writing a new constitution, the farmers were able to address the problems which the nation faced under the Articles of Confederation. The most important issues were addressed by the establishment of a stronger national government that was selected by the citizens. Unlike the Articles of Confederation, were each state maintain its own sovereign rule, each state was represented equally in Congress through the representatives elected by its citizen. Therefore, power was no longer placed in a single institution such as the states or one overall governing body, but rather in the hands of the people. This government had the power to tax, regulate trade and commerce, and coin a national currency with a majority vote versus a unanimous vote.

The Articles of the Confederation was the first government constitution that the United States used, and, although there were strength like the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, there were major weaknesses of the Articles of the Confederation like the following: requiring 9 out of the 13 colonial votes from the representatives from different states to pass a law; having no executive and judicial branch; and the federal government being unable to impose tax revenue onto the states. Such flaws would eventually lead to the Constitution and the repeal of the articles, for the Constitution was a measure to fix the problems of the articles with a stronger government that allowed them to impose taxes and and implement new laws for a more effective government.

The United States confronted many problems once they gained their independence from Great Britain. One of the biggest problems was their form of government at that time, which was stated in the Articles of Confederation. This presented many problem to the states, as stated in a document about the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, some of the problems of the Articles of Confederation were the poor international trade, poor foreign relations, weak economy, and Shay’s Rebellion. The people, specifically the Federalists, wanted a new government because of the weakness of the government at that moment.
