For this assignment, I was required to conduct an interview with a professional who has received his or her education and training as a counselor (LPC, LCAS, CRC). The individual I interviewed is a Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist and a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate who works at the mental health and substance abuse clinic. The interview included questions about her education, training, current position, her functions, duties and responsibilities, the services this place offers, the clinical issues she deals with, and the interventions she provides in her work settings. Additionally, I inquired about her working relationships with other professionals employed at the clinic. The next step involved summarizing the information …show more content…
competency. My interviewee described her professional background, credentials, and work experience, which allowed me to understand the nature of her work, as well as gain insight into working at the mental health and substance abuse clinic. I realized how essential it is to collaborate with the doctors and the nurses to ensure the optimal care. Consulting with other professionals allows to create clients’ comprehensive clinical profiles and tailor complete treatment plans that include medication management (A.3.). This assignment also helped me gain knowledge about the emergency management system at the mental health and substance abuse agency, which addresses A.10. competency. I learned that in the crisis situations associated with mental health and substance dependence, such as, experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms, including physical and psychiatric complications, the patient is provided with an immediate assessment in order to determine the appropriate level of care. If it is necessary, the referrals to detox or psychiatric facilities are
The mental health status of a patient is very important when you are dealing with drug abuse and suicidality. Knowing if there is co-morbidity in the diagnosis will help determine the best treatment plan for the patient. However, not all hospitals are required to run mental health screening on their patients. Often this test is left up to the desecration of the medical staff on duty at the time of the patients intake. Data Analysis Plan

Section 1: Professional Development Plan For most of my life I have been motivated to help people so when I made the decision to continue my education at Walden University, I knew that I was ready for the journey. I am currently seeking a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am expected to graduate in the winter of 2025. This paper was written on June 30th, 2023, with the intent of further understanding my motivations for seeking this degree as well as visualizing the type of counselor I want to be in the future. Throughout this paper, I also discuss what is expected of me throughout my degree program, counseling career, and overall professional development.
Triggers, warning signs, and crisis planning are the components of the process, and require interdisciplinary work from the patient, nurse, doctor, counselor and other support staff. As with every human being, stress is a normal part of life. How we cope with those stressors is the difference between mental illness and mental wellness. With patients with substance-abuse issues, their coping mechanism is their substance of choice. So it is important to identify those stressors early on, identify early warning signs, look for inevitable situations where the patient feels like everything is falling apart, and most of all, prevent them from using.

Most leaders within our agency were either counselors at some point or they have Rehabilitation Counseling degrees. I believe in being knowledgeable in all aspects of our operations, especially in the broadest service provided by our agency, rehab counseling. This program is the first step in securing a future within the agency. While I love my current role, I look forward to continuing with the progress that I have made within the agency. I look to gain knowledge and first-hand experience of being a counselor so that I can apply what I learn to agency programs.

Both case examples present differently, but much of the crisis work is the same. For each case, imagine you are the counselor and have to make a recommendation of outpatient or inpatient care. Discuss the rationale for referral to outpatient or inpatient treatment in for both of these cases (30 points). Use empirical sources (at least 2) to cite your rationale (APA).
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
Being the clinician and conducting an intake interview was one of the most the practical, informative, and thought-provoking assignments I have completed throughout undergrad thus far. While allowing me to practice clinical interviewing skills, I learned how difficult yet essential various skills were in order to successfully complete an intake process. Specifically, I found taking a direct approach and asking specific questions was most successful. For example, with my client, Ian, I was able to find out the most relevant information about his manic tendencies through asking him specific questions. His intake form described having manic tendencies in the past, though there was not enough information there to really get to the core reason for
From the ideas and techniques that Mrs. Perez used, I realized how these interviews could be helpful if utilized and applied in the proper way. To me, this assignment was the best and it helped me further my development and growth as a future mental health counselor. The most interesting and educative aspect of this interview was how Mrs. Perez applied most of the counseling techniques, such motivational stage that we have been taught in class. Aspects such as paraphrasing the words of your clients, tone, and facial expressions are critical in a counseling session and students always overlook these techniques. The way Mrs. Perez employed according to her explanation was excellent and her ideas justified the importance of such points in any counseling session.
Adherence to professional ethics is a foundational aspect of counseling practice. As students, we are trained to be ethically competent, providing the most principled treatment for our clients. Yet, ethical issues are not just encountered by novice counselors, experienced practitioners face ethical dilemmas throughout their career, as well. The American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014) sets ethical obligations and provides guidance for how to manage ethical dilemmas. The code considers professional values that counselors should be aware of, but also ethical principles that guide practice (ACA, 2014).
The counselor has an ethical responsibility to strive to reduce any harm caused to a client through a empathic
In this semester, I have been exposed to the subject of Introduction to Guidance and Counselling which is a new field of study for me. After I have received this lesson, I can relate my experiences with what I have learned. Not only that, I also have different perspective towards after I learned this subject. The aspects that I can relate my experiences and thoughts with are the differences between advice, guidance and counselling as well as the goals of counselling.
