Crime in the Victorian era was a prevalent issue that was deeply rooted in the social and economic conditions of the time. The Victorian era, which lasted from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, was a time of great industrialization and urbanization. As cities grew and became more crowded, crime rates increased, and law enforcement struggled to keep up. This essay will examine the causes and effects of crime in the Victorian era, as well as the efforts made to combat it.
The Victorian era was marked by a significant increase in crime, much of which was attributed to poverty. The Industrial Revolution brought about a rapid expansion of urban areas and a growth in industry, which led to a substantial increase in poverty. Many of

The Industrial Revolution brought about significant changes in society, including a shift from rural to urban areas and the growth of industry. This led to the creation of large cities with high populations, where poverty, overcrowding, and unemployment were prevalent. These conditions made people more vulnerable to crime, as they struggled to make ends meet. In particular, theft and burglary were common crimes committed by those living in poverty. Moreover, the rise of industry led to a new type of crime, as factories became targets for theft and sabotage. Additionally, the growth of the railway system made it easier for criminals to transport stolen goods across the country. Overall, industrialization played a significant role in the rise of crime in the Victorian era, and it was only with the introduction of social and economic reforms that the situation began to improve. Dyer was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of infants between 1880 and 1896. She would take in unwanted or illegitimate babies and promise to find them good homes, but instead she would neglect or murder them for profit. Dyer was finally caught in 1896 after the body of a baby was found floating in the Thames River with a piece of paper tied around its neck with Dyer's address on it. Upon searching her home, police discovered the bodies of several other infants. Dyer was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging, which was carried out in 1896. Her case brought to light the issue of baby farming and the need for better regulation of adoption practices in Victorian England.
Instead of living by the laws of the last century, this progress was beneficial to society as a whole. Crime at the turn of the century was also a concern, especially in urban communities. In this paper, I will discuss the 1905 jury trial of Robert Jefferson who was tried and convicted for the crime of Burglary in the Third Degree. On Monday, January 23, 1905, Mary F. Lake reported a burglary
There were a lot of social and structural forces that lead to crime. During this time period, it was very hard to make money to support yourself or a family. Because of the lack of money it almost always led to crime. Crime and the lack of money influenced by yours or your family status, which made it almost impossible to climb the social ladder. There were also many structural forces such as a corrupt government and police force.
“(When) plants such as (the) textile factory appeared, soon the production of exports outpaced import of goods” (Document 3). Factories resulted in business owners receiving a greater profit because of an increase in trade due to goods being produced faster and sold cheaper. Therefore a cycle was set that benefitted consumers, workers, and business owners and contributed to the capital increase in the economy. Railroads also lead to economic growth, and “during the 1800s the amount of railroad track increased dramatically in Britain, the Continental Europe, and the United States” (Document 5). The railroad system was highly valued by business owners because it expanded the amount of customers they were able to deliver to, goods could be shipped faster, and the payload increased significantly.
It had greatly increased the economy and revolutionized how products were produced through machinery. In document 13, Britain Iron Production in 1940 was 17,350 tons, but in 1839, it increased to 1,248,781 tons of iron and eventually increased to 9,000,000 tons of iron in 1900 and document 12, cars have been created for faster transportation and wealthiness of the person in the picture. It has shown how the economy has greatly improved after the Industrial Revolution occurred by revolutionizing the machinery works and letting the machine do the hard job, faster and more accurately throughout the process. But flaws were not preventable in the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution had caused an outbreak of population in cities, called urbanization.
The Industrial Revolution, which began in the late 18th century, brought about a rapid economic growth and modernization that transformed the way goods were produced and consumed. With the introduction of new technologies and machines, production became more efficient and less labor-intensive, leading to an increase in the production of goods and a decrease in their cost. However, The rapid economic growth due to industrialization also had a significant impact on the quality of life for humans and how they live, particularly for those who worked in factories and children. While the industrial revolution did create new opportunities and convenient inventions that made life easier it also contained poor living conditions, poor working conditions,
Those two define most of the cause of crime today, so maybe they weren’t as big of a factor as in the past. Today, the current city is worse in how crime has
The Industrial Revolution marked a turning point in history with mass amounts of changes creating everything we see to know,It all began in the 1750’s. In this time the beginning living and working conditions were for and the life of a worker changed drastically. Living and working conditions in the 1750’s were poor. “The streets are usually unpaved and filled with holes, filthy and strew with refuse” (Doc 3). With people living in the streets and turning a town into a city will have its flaws.
My paper aims to discuss the three different factors of criminal behaviour, what causes it and why. My essay will examine and focus mainly on the genetic makeup of a person, the environment in which they are raised in and gender differences.
Stud Terkel quoted in his book "Hard Times," “What I remember most of those times is that poverty creates desperation, and desperation creates violence.” (pg. 195). During the Hard Times crime rate increased as the family lost everything. This ultimately led people, to do anything to gain money. Hence, the growth in crime
The Industrial Revolution took place from the 18th to 19th century and was a period when rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. There were many effects of this mass industrialization of cities, some good and some bad. However, the negative effects of the Industrial Revolution outweigh the positive effects. Increased use of child labor, massive increase of population in cities and urban areas, and poor working conditions for factory workers were all factors that contributed to the Industrial Revolution causing overall negative effects.
The Industrial Revolution, which occurred between around 1760 and 1820-1840, was a period of transition from hand production methods to machines, new chemical manufacturing and iron production processes, and the use of water and steam power. It led to unprecedented population growth and a rise in average income and population[2]. The growth of industries and factories in Great Britain led to urbanization, overcrowding, and poor living conditions in industrial towns[7]. In the short term, the poor living conditions in industrial towns led to the spread of diseases and illnesses[8]. However, the British government passed several laws and regulations aimed at improving the lives of people living in industrial towns.
During the Victorian Era, much of the population was poor. This led to crimes being committed to survive. “I’m sorry to say, I’ve eaten your pie” (Dickens 38). Magwitch, the criminal in Great Expectations, had stolen a file and some food from the Gargerys. He admits this to the officers as well as Mr. Joe Gargery, the owner of the stolen file.
The Victorian era began in 1837 , which is the day queen Victoria was first appointed to the throne . During the queen time as monarch the upper class lived a rather great life , but the poor people suffered greatly between the years 1831 and 1901 population in England rose from 1 million to 6 million . The drastic increase came from the industrial revolution. Due to the population increase find work and affordable houses became a very big issue among the lower class people. Most members of the family including young kids were forced to work in horrible conditions.
This essay will discuss crime as both a social problem and a sociological problem. Crime is seen as a typical function of society. Crime doesn’t happen without society. It is created and determined by the surrounding society. According to the CSO, the number of dangerous and negligent acts committed between the years of 2008 and 2012 rose from 238’000 in 2008 to 257’000 in 2012.
Crime offers a way in which poor people can obtain material goods they cannot attain through legal means. Often, threat or force helps them acquire even more goods, encouraging them to commit more violent acts such as robbery and rape. Thus, poverty increases crime
