A crisis is a stressor which can happen to anyone at any period of time. When an individual is faced with a situation and does not know how to handle, a crisis arises. Personal difficulties and experiences which are intolerable are some examples individuals faced in a crisis. This form of difficulty often exceeds an individual coping mechanism which can imposed danger in an individual. My client, Ms Linda is a supervisor at a prestigious hospital for over ten years. His mother passed away several days ago due to old age. Ms Linda feels remorse and overwhelmed. She pointed out that she experience difficulties going to sleep at night and prefers to be alone. To help clients pass through their current crisis, a Crisis Interventionist guides them through their intense feelings by providing an attachment in reality and provides support. It is important for a Crisis Interventionist to engage in active listening and avoid asking “why” questions as these may imply blaming or accusing a client. Crisis interventionist may conduct assessments or refer clients to a medical doctor or psychiatrist if he feels that their symptoms are treatable and may need medical assistance. Therapist met with the client for individual therapy at school. Therapist did a check in regards to symptoms, mood, thoughts, emotions, coping skills, the goals that he achieved, and behaviors since the last session. Therapist processed the client's negative thoughts. Therapist used open-ended questions to address any concerns the client may have. Therapist encouraged the client to keep motivated during the stressful time, especially when he has negative thoughts, which stats usually with negative thoughts, argue with his sisters, or with his aunt, or if he has been triggered by any internal or external thoughts.
In the case of the Path 1 scenario, the main crisis event is the eviction of Jodi and her children from their home. For Jodi the eviction was not expected and created an unexpected situational stressor. Through this, a counselor is able to demonstrate their focus on helping the patients by showing the client that they understand their problems. Firstly, I need to identify the causes and formation of the difficulty situation of my client. I should not involve my own personal emotions when analysing the situation. Next, clarification of the situation is essential. The clients should figure out themselves on how to face the situation. An effective counsellor listen more than talks, and what they do say gives the client a sense of being heard and understood.
It is important for them to put their thoughts aside and place themselves in their client’s feelings and remain empathic. Any individual who are struggling to cope, are all authorized to contact counselling services. As counsellors they have to uphold equal opportunities as they are there to help clients think differently. The importance of confidentiality within counselling is extremely valuable as every individual has the right to say how their information can be accessed. Before starting a counselling session, counsellors agree not to disclose any information with anyone.
