Critical thinking is a high level of cognitive skills that helps us communicate and understand things effectively. In the You Tube video "Stossel Testing Therapeutic Touch," I found it was really interesting how the participants were given a placebo and yet most of them felt all these beneficial sleep changes. The power of the mind is amazing because if you believe it will work most likely you will feel that it did. My mother has all these crazy beliefs and I recall when I was bout 8 years old a bee stung me on my hand. I was crying and my mom told me if I wanted to get rid of the pain I had to get a pregnant woman to rub sugar on the wound.

The ability to think is an innate action that, for the most part, all people possess. Nonetheless, not everybody has the ability or knowledge of how to develop this quality into something greater and beneficial. Critical thinking is not inherent; rather the skills necessary to think analytically must be learned and practiced with an open mind. It involves listening with the intent of understanding others, drawing conclusions based on strong evidence and asking curiously about the situation. Not only must one be willing to evaluate a situation slowly and thoroughly, but one must also respect the views of others and accept the possibility of being wrong.

Critical thinking could be best defined as finding ways to see the best judgment with open, imaginative, and honest thinking. The most important aspects of critical thinking starts with clear communication with the people around you and complete lack of judgment when making decisions. This is important because being closed minded and judgemental will negatively affect any decisions that concern more than one group and can negatively affect decisions that concern more than one person. Next is having the ability to properly weigh the importance of each separate idea and belief of each group in order to make a sound decision that benefits every group. According to Paul Stearns, a philosophy professor, there are many definitions of critical thinking and they vary depending on its source. In the video, Professor Stearns enumerated four common ideas of all the different definitions of critical thinking that he found in his research. First, critical thinking is active that involves a thorough thought process. One must carefully prioritize and evaluate goals instead of passively being driven by emotions and desires when applying critical thinking. Second, critical thinking involves solving problems effectively.

Students should be required to take liberal arts courses that will make them consider different viewpoints, construct arguments, and learn from mistakes throughout history. With one-sided learning that is not interactive or discussion based, people become accustomed to following someone else’s directions. In Bok’s novel, he states that the vast majority of faculty members considers critical thinking to be “the most important purpose of undergraduate education” (Bok, 2006, 67-68). As both Bok and Nussbaum emphasize, critical thinking is necessary in most careers, from business and healthcare to legal and governmental, so that people can see both sides of a situation. However, it is most worthwhile in helping with decision-making.

Critical thinking is relevant in a few different aspects of life. For example, critical thinking can be applied to school and learning. There are people who support using different aspects of critical thinking in students curriculum. Laura Hummell said, "Critical thinking skill development is crucial in elementary schools. Students who are allowed to explore, empathize, question, hypothesize, conceptualize, experiment, and evaluate throughout their own learning become productive community members" (Hummell 5).

It is a truth universally acknowledged that any good American wanting to have a civil conversation with another must avoid the topics of religion, politics, money…and education. Indeed, education, particularly in this day and age, is a large source of contention amongst educators, parents, and experts alike for a myriad of reasons, one being standardized testing. While a majority of educated individuals believe in the importance of standardized testing, others claim that these assessments fail to prepare or benefit students for future jobs. Mandatory standardized testing and its ability to effectively measure critical thinking stands as one specific facet that readily fuels this controversy.

The article pointed to the several researches defining critical thinking skills. If I was taught 20 years ago what I know now. I am sure I would have been more prepared with the knowledge and skills of framing my mind to the critical thinking skills. Putting the skills and knowledge and applying them to my younger life. The article describes critical thinking as many different observations of one’s worldview.

Having a critical mind makes one wiser and more tact about what he or she states. Through philosophical analysis, our critical thinking skills are improved because it teaches us to consider certain things first, before finally coming up to a decision or before we continue to converse with

In order to think more critically about my topic, there are three ways that I could create a more critical line of thought. The first way would be associating social media and privacy with like terms. These terms would include privacy rights, the first amendment, and overall internet privacy just to name a few. Social media privacy is just a subset of overall internet privacy, which all falls under the category of public space. Due to the fact that the internet is a public space, the amendments are basically the rules of what can and cannot be posted or shown online.

These skills are a central facet of everyday life and to know how to properly use them will help in the long run.
