The first part of the study involved observing child K’s motor and fine motor skills in her home. First, I would observe her motor skills. To get her more excited, I decided to play with her and her sister. At 4 years of age, child K should be enjoying the movements of hopping, jumping, and running while be more adventurous than they were at 3 years of age (Santrock, pg. 158, 2012). Obviously, at age 4, she has already learned how to walk and run on her own.

There are four types of development, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social. Physical development is the growth of gross and fine motor, skills. Gross motor skills are walking, running, throwing, and crawling. Fine motor skills are writing, holding a fork, and using scissors. Physical development is also the easiest to see.

Physical Development Watson (2012) defines physical development as the process that starts in human infancy and continues into late adolescent concentrating on fine and gross motor development. Fine motor development involves more finely tuned movements such as grasping, building bricks and gross motor development involves larger movements such as walking, climbing, climbing stairs and riding bicycles. In the movie “Yours, Mine and Ours”, when analysing Ethan Beardsley who is four years old, the youngest child of Frank Beardsley; a single father of eight children, Ethan’s fine motor development such as when he was using a chalk when he and Helen North’s youngest were scribbling on Frank’s “Operation Light House” board, he grasped the chalk with ease as the chalk was big. This proves he has acquired the fine motor skill of grasping.

Early Childhood Education: Theoretical Perspectives Abstract Studies confirm that high-quality education early in a child’s life leads to continued success in school, at work, and results in a healthier well-rounded student who is emotionally and socially strong. In most early childhood programs and schools, technology will be part of the learning background of the future. To make sure this new technology is used effectively, we must confirm that teachers are fully trained and supported. In this paper, theoretical perspectives of child development are discussed with the basic elements of learning program.

Practitioner observes a specific child, and the outcome of the observation will enable practitioners to plan for that child. A practitioner may observe a child in the mark- making or writing area and notice that the child finds it difficult to hold a pencil. The practitioner would then plan activities that would develop fine motor skills, such as threading or sorting small objects.

Cognitive abilities enable children to process the sensory information that they collect from the environment. According to Wood, Smith and Grossniklaus (2012), Piaget defined cognitive development as the progressive reorganization of the mental processes that results in biological experience and maturation. As numerous researchers have explained, children normally undergo many changes from birth to adolescents, most of them being growth related. According to Cook (2005), the changes in thinking is what researchers call cognitive development. In toddlers, cognitive development is observed through the early use of tools and objects, the child’s behavior when objects are moved in front of them and their understanding when objects and when people are in their environment.

There are two theorists associated with cognitive development; Piaget and Vygotsky. Piaget believes that things children learn and do are organized as schemes, groups of similar actions and thoughts are repeated in response to the environment. Vygotsky believes that thoughts and language are separate functions for infants and toddlers. This is important for me to know because when teaching my first graders using Piaget’s belief that children curiosity to adapt to their environment, will help me in setting up my classroom so as to provide the friendliest environmental atmosphere. Another useful belief of Piaget that I intend to use, is by exploring and manipulating physical objects, children gain a relationship with their physical environment.

It allows them to interact with other child that are their age in a classroom environment. Therefore, making them feel as comfortable and familiar with their new environment is important. Fortunately, there are a few interactive ways in which you can do this. Read Books About Preschool with Them Children’s books are one of the easiest ways that you can educate your child about a subject that may be a little more complex or unfamiliar. Look for children’s books that talk about preschool and read these books to or with your child.
