Cultural Competency in general is related to the ability to serve people in an appropriate way where they feel respected. In health care this refers to comfortable treatments that meet the standards of the patient from any backgrounds with all their different ways of living. It is very dangerous to use cultural blindness and forget that different culture see different manners as acceptable. Every culture comes with different manners. While it is normal to have a stare eye contact, call people by their first name, be open and speaking up, etc. all of the above could be disrespectful in, as an example, Japan. Eye contact is in most Asian countries considered rude, calling someone by their first name is disrespectful, openness and speaking up is the opposite of the Japanese culture and goes against their believes. Those are just small examples of how different cultures can be. With the absence of cultural competency in health care it could for example happen, that a patient from Japan, called Suzuki Yasuo, is seeing a doctor. The doctor is used to American patients and starts their interaction with big eye contact, and a kind but strong hand shake. After taking the self-assessment survey for quality and culture, I would like to improve and understand how cultural competence can have a real impact on clinical outcomes. Taking from some of the questions I answered wrong, it make me wants to be cultural competent. There are a few questions I am surprised and shocked, that I answered them incorrectly. In a healthcare setting you will see different cultures that will come and go. It is very important to know how to deal with each culture so that you can help them while still making sure they are comfortable. Native Americans have many different characteristics because of the different tribes from all over the world. Healthcare providers should be familiar with them so they know how to distinguish them if needed. While knowing their characteristics they should also know how to interact with Native Americans as well since their culture is a lot different than ours, we want to make sure that we don’t disrespect them.
Humans are complex and diverse beings that belong to different cultures, speak different languages, and have different perspectives on the world they live in. When cultures collide, it can be difficult to empathize and respect the differences that exist. Cultural sensitivity is, “The ability to be appropriately responsive to the attitudes, feelings, or circumstances of groups of people that share a common and distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic or cultural heritage” (Arnold & Boggs, 2016, p. 119). Cultural sensitivity and effective communication, especially in the health care setting, are essential to bridging cultures and creating a common understanding.
Creating value through collaboration has been a topic of concern over the last 50 years as the spending in health care has increased. The goal is to provide quality and affordability and because of past efforts, enrollment increased drastically while it created a shortage of providers. Integrating behavioral and medical health has not been properly addressed due to stigmas and lack of education. Behavior health is more common today and costly. In efforts to integrate and improve patient outcomes and provider experiences there are many ways to achieve this goal such as train medical providers, train behavioral practioniers and embed behavioral providers in primary care settings.
The purpose of the book is “to sensitize providers and those learning to be providers to the complex issues involved in cross-cultural service delivery” (Pg. 3). Furthermore, the author writes the goal of Cultural Diversity: A Primer for the Human Service is to train culturally competent human service providers (Pg. 2). In chapter two, “What It Means to Be Culturally Competent,” we learn about the importance of being culturally competent. Cultural competence is the ability to provide effective services cross-culturally (Diller, 2015, Pg. 17).
It entails an awareness of the physical, social, spiritual and cultural needs of the patient. By so doing, it can help facilitate a more perceptive approach to the expectations of the patients. Hence, it will lead to the provision of a more culturally sensitive approach to the delivery of care. As a result, it will lead to an enhanced understanding and improved patient care.

In regards of your post here I agree that Cultural Competencies are a set of beliefs that needs to be taught and passed on from an early age and preferable long before people are taking courses that relate to Human Services and working with different populations. While class room and work experiences are a great start I question if it is enough when a worker in this field goes home after 8 hours and relapses back into her or his own cultural experiences. This topic is relevant to social work because it is talking about cultural competence in the health care system and the one major skill that social workers need is cultural competency. This article is also relevant to social work because it talks about the importance of cultural competence in reducing disparities through culturally sensitive and unbiased quality care and since the social work field is all about treating everyone equally and fairly, this article falls right under its relevance. It continues to talk about programs to improve the knowledge of providers on cultural competency and general approaches that have been utilized in creating educational interventions to address cultural competence. This is great because social workers are never done learning, it is always important to train social worker on how to be culturally competent, specially because the populations being served are very diverse therefore, there should always be a way to train service providers on how to have cultural awareness.

I think it takes work for everyone to be able to be great in an intercultural setting. It will even take more work for me due to the fact that I do not have a very extensively diverse background. I will have to have an openness to understanding different experiences and traditions that patients might haveto be able to provide great and competent care.
