Many labels were used to characterize the Middle Ages, however the best were The Dark Ages, The Age of Feudalism, and The Age of Faith. The Dark Ages accurately identifies the Middle Ages because of all the death, destruction, and plague throughout. The Middle Ages followed the decline of the Roman Empire, which causes very harsh times across Europe. Also this time period consists of the plague which virtually slaughters one-third of Europe.

The first reason the Dark Ages were not as dark as the name claims for them to be, is because during the Dark Ages there were tons of advances in education. The information in Doc A that claims “Europe suffered a decline in commerce and manufacturing, in education, in literature and the arts and in almost all that makes possible a high civilization.” is completely biased. And that the Dark Ages “Did not support learning” (Background Information) which is completely untrue. During the Dark Ages, there were still people learning and teaching. One of them being a monk named Richer, who “went to the town of Chartres, in what is today France, to study.”

The people of Europe experienced a large change in their everyday lives affected of course by death, but also affected by the unstable society and economy. How the people reacted also contributed to making the society and economy even more unstable. The small population, caused by the Black Death, drastically changed the once strong and stable economy of Europe. The Black Death effected the laborers greatly, and because there were less laborers, nobles had to pay the laborers more. In turn this meant that the nobles had less wealth.

In conclusion, the dark ages were not really dark at all. The dark ages had many great moments in their time period. Some of which include the Magna Carta, Joan of Ark, The booming trade routes, and the continuing process of renewing things. The times may have been intellectually dark, but I don’t think dark ages is the correct term to describe the middle

Kate Foley Ms. Zisel Global 9H April 2nd, 2017 The Middle Ages was a time of destruction and redemption for the people of the Roman Empire between A.D. 500-1400. The best description of this time period can be represented by four terms, the Golden Age, the Dark Age, the Age of Faith and the Age of Feudalism. Each time caused for a significant change in society that had a tremendous impact. From the troubling times of invasions and destructions to a time of prosperity and progression, the best terms that describe the Middle Ages are the Dark Ages and the Golden Ages.

The Renaissance was a period in time where everything started to change after the middle ages. During this historical period humans stared evolving by becoming smarter and inventing useful recourses that have changed the world. The renaissance was a life changing period which brought more joy to the world after conquering the dark ages. The Renaissance changed man’s view on the world by using Art, Science and Literature to make humans brighter and because of the rapid information they were gaining. Art during the Renaissance grew rapidly because of Leonardo Da Vici, and Michelangelo who changed the way people painted and drew by creating strategies which made art more interesting.

The Dark Ages consisted of invasion, and loss of trade and government. “The barbarians have broken through the ramparts. The Saracen [Moors] invasions have spread in successive waves over the South. There is no longer any trade, only unceasing terror...society has no longer any government,” (Doc. 1). These problems led to the decline and therefore this period of time was named the Dark Ages.

The Bubonic Plague The Bubonic Plague was a disease that was spread through fleas found on rodents. It took place during the late middle ages (1340 - 1400) in mainly Europe and Asia and killed approximately 25 million people. The Bubonic plague was a turning point in history because it caused an advancement in medicine and hygiene, destabilized the Roman Catholic church and caused one of the greatest recessions in history. However, there were a few things that stayed the same, such as the manor system, agriculture, and aspects of medicine.

Europe faced many difficulties during the 13th and early 14th century which was considered the dark ages, many things accrued during that time. There was war between England and France which lasted for a hundred years from 1337-1453 these claimed many lives between the British and the French people to this day they have not forgotten the tragedy befallen both countries.
