The definition of law is a system of rules that a community or country set to regulate the people apart of it. To make a law, the first step is to create a bill. A bill is proposal for a new law. Once the bill is created, it must make its way through congress. There are two stages for the bill to go through. The first one is called a committee consideration. In this stage, the bill is sent to a standing committee based on the subject unless it must do with taxes, then it would go to the house ways and means committee. If the bill does not get forgotten about, hearings get set up for government officials, lobbyists, and experts to share their opinions. After this is done, the bill goes on to stage two. Describe how congress works. Congress is made up of two chambers. The first chamber is the Senate (also known as the Upper Chamber). The senate is made up of two senators from each state. The senators must be 30 years of age or older, be a citizen of the U.S for at least nine years, and live in the state that they represent. The term for a senator is six years. The senate belongs to the legislative branch and they write and vote on new laws. The second chamber is the House of Representatives (also known as the lower chamber). The House contains four hundred thirty-five representatives. Each of them represents an area of a state, also known as a district. A representative must be at least 25 years old, be a citizen for at least seven years, and live in the state they represent. Their term length is two years. Their job is to start laws that require people to pay taxes and decide for a government official should go on trial in front of the senate for committing a crime against the country. Any bill that originates in the House must be ratified by 2/3’s of the Senate. Each State is represented within the Senate by two-senators. This was the result of a compromise between the larger and smaller states. The House is dominated by the larger states which have more representatives due to their larger population. Initially the Senate was selected by State Legislators; this has since changed to the selection process we have today by popular vote.

Both houses share a similarity in the term limit per member. In both houses a member can run for reelection for an unlimited amount of time, being no restrictions as to how long they run. A difference in the structure is not how many times a person can run for reelection, but how they do it. Members of the House of Representatives run for reelection every two years, while only ⅓ of the Senate runs for reelection every two years.
