Something I learned about in Herbology 301 is healing. Healing is an important part of our life, which is why i wanted to write about it. In the short fiction story “The Monkey Garden” by Sandra Cisneros, the author uses deep, rich figurative language to effect the exotic setting. “There were sunflowers, big as flowers on Mars and thick cockscombs bleeding the deep red fringe of theater curtain” (Cisneros 1). A simile is used to create a scene of being on another planet, a place where the monkeys once lived. The usage of descriptive words such as, “ bleeding the deep fringe” (1), and “ thick cockscomb” (1), to give the reader a sense of being in a jungle filled with tropical life and pleasure. The author uses words that are exotic in nature to emanate the jungle scenery.

In Barbara Kingsolver’s story, “The Bean Trees”, something that makes it so effective is her use of figurative language to depict scenery. In chapter 12, Mattie takes Taylor, Esperanza and Estevan to a beautiful desert at the time of the first rain, so they can see the natural world come to life. In order to make the scene come alive, Kingsolver uses sillies, metaphors and personification as a mean of figurative language. Kingsolver personifies the mountains and city.

Lophophora Williamsii Lophophora Willaimsii, also known as the peyote cactus, is an extreme hallucinogen mainly used in Native American religious ceremonies and rituals. It is known to have been introduced by the southern plain tribes, because of where the cactus is from. This extreme drug has been illegal in the United States since 1918, but, in 1965, peyote was legalized for practice within Native American religious beliefs and practices for the NAC (Native American Church). Extremely vivid images, and loopy visuals is common when under the influence of peyote. In the new world when European immigrants arrived into the U.S., it was in belief that peyote was used for anti-Christian beliefs and was supposed to be the works of the devil.

But Eiseley said, “there is nothing very “normal” about Nature. Once upon a time, there were no flowers at all.” Further implicating that without the emergence of flowers, the world wouldn’t be considered as a whole. Eiseley’s main purpose is to allude the readers into thinking that there are many other possible reasons as to why the world came to be, and his reason is the emergence of the angiosperms. The Immense Journey was specifically written to discuss the history of humanity, however Eiseley’s “How Flowers Changed the World” was written in a way to combine science and humanity in a poetic manner.

Many people who go into nature always see it as something beautiful and aesthetic, but they never see the other side to nature. Humankind’s connection with nature isn’t a real one. They always look at the bright side of nature but are blind to the true dark side of nature. JB MacKinnon’s article “False Idyll” (2012), reveals that nature is not just flowers in a field but can also be the survival of the fittest. He backs up his claim by talking about nature through anecdotes and expert’s research.

Thomas, as a native Californian has seen the ups and downs of the Santa Ana winds. She has experienced what good they bring to the deserts and canyons, as well as the bad they bring to the new developments that spring up every year. She sees how the winds blow massive natural wildfires across the deserts scorching the low lying shrubbery that grows there. Thomas knows that these fires are what keep the ecosystem turning and re-growing every year. “The padre’s staff--require the heat of a flame to crack open the seed pods.”

“Some Beasts” by Pablo Neruda is a beautiful poem that is a great example of his overall body or work. Pablo Neruda utilizes unique similes and archetypes in order to depict a beautiful scene full of Chile’s most famous and charismatic creatures. The first few lines in the poem were beautifully crafted with easy to understand figurative language. The iguana was described in parts, with his ridge being described as a rainbow and his tongue being compared to a dart. The rainbow-ridge beautifully ties back to the first line of the poem, which links the idea of twilight, a colorful time of the day that is full of reds, oranges, blues, and yellows, to the coloration found in the baggy ridges of the iguana.

Dana Gioia’s poem, “Planting a Sequoia” is grievous yet beautiful, sombre story of a man planting a sequoia tree in the commemoration of his perished son. Sequoia trees have always been a symbol of wellness and safety due to their natural ability to withstand decay, the sturdy tree shows its significance to the speaker throughout the poem as a way to encapsulate and continue the short life of his infant. Gioia utilizes the elements of imagery and diction to portray an elegiac tone for the tragic death, yet also a sense of hope for the future of the tree. The poet also uses the theme of life through the unification of man and nature to show the speaker 's emotional state and eventual hopes for the newly planted tree. Lastly, the tree itself becomes a symbol for the deceased son as planting the Sequoia is a way to cope with the loss, showing the juxtaposition between life and death.
