However, in an amazing feat she doesn’t dwell on this fact. Her morality comes up in snippets through the book, but for the most part all of the members of the Secret Annex live their lives as normally as possible while in hiding. Nevertheless, the fact that her life is in danger makes Anne acutely aware of her mortality. She expresses the desire to do something worthwhile in life and hopes to become immortalized through her writing. Because the novel takes place during World War II, death and genocide are nearly omnipresent in the novel. In contrast, Death, The Book Thief's narrator, keeps us constantly focused on mortality. Throughout the novel, the deaths of prominent characters reaffirm the presence of
Opening Paragraph: By showing death has a human-like nature, Mark Zusak, the author of The Book Thief, exemplifies that death does, in fact, have a soul death feels for the people that he has to take to the afterlife. With World War II occurring in Europe, death tells the story of a life of a particular young girl who piques his interests in the midst of a chaotic time in history. Zusak shows author's style by using personification, symbolism, and foreshadowing of death in The Book Thief.
Death plays a bigger role in life than life itself. When people die, people cry, and while people cry, a clear moment of lucidity occurs. Death is what makes every moment worth living and is told through stories of books and movies with symbols both subtle and blunt. Night, for example, is an autobiographical novel recalling Eliezer’s experience through concentration camps while The Book Thief is a historical fiction film where Liesel is a bystander who participates in activities symbolizing war. History is intertwined death.
War has a significant impact on anyone, but especially on young people. In the memoir Farewell to Manzanar and The Diary of a Young Girl, this becomes quite clear to readers. Farewell to Manzanar follows Jeanne Wakatsuki, who reflects on and narrates her experiences before, during, and after the Japanese internment in WWII. The author of The Diary of a Young Girl, however, did not survive the war. Written by Anne Frank during her teenage years hiding from the Nazis in the Netherlands, the diary details her day-to-day life in the Secret Annex - the house where she and her family took refuge.

Children during the Holocaust were targeted because they were weak and small, and the Nazis wanted strong and independent Jews who were willing to work, but some children were strong and were able to work in labor camps. The lives of children inside the camps grew up with the grim memories of being separated from loved ones by death and torture. Hitler’s goal was to destroy a whole entire race and by targeting the kids, this would be a faster way of killing many innocent Jews. Depending on the age of the child and the gender, would determine whether or not that child would live because the Germans would rather prefer the boys over girls. Throughout the novel, Death describes the life-changing events that Liesel is forced to undergo, but he highlights how she is able to power through them and achieve an outcome so great. Most of all, he explains how is eventually able to understand the true meaning of words, and how they have the capacity to be so simple, yet unimaginably powerful.
