As Winston Churchill said,” Success is not final. Failure is not fatal”. It is the perseverance and hope to continue that counts. This is the story of a boy named Junior whose key is his hope. The Absolutely True Diary is the life story of a Arnold Spirit (Junior) and his efforts to break the stereotypes about Indians. He wants to become something amazing; he wants to be successful. Juniors experiences throughout the book changes him as a person and he understands that life has its ups and downs but if people have hope, they can do anything. In The Absolutely True Diary, Sherman Alexie uses literary devices, Mr.P’s advice, and Juniors experiences to illustrate the theme that perseverance and hope can lead to great things. Alexie uses the literary …show more content…
P’s advice and Junior’s experiences to to convey the theme that perseverance and hope can lead to great things. For example when Mr. P’s gives Junior advice regarding how to succeed in life, he says, “you kept your hope. And now, you have to go somewhere where other people have hope...away from this sad, sad, sad reservation”(Alexie 43). This evidence implies that, Mr. P’s advises Junior to keep up the hope but he know’s that Junior will give up and lose hope, being in the reservation. As a whole, he exclaim that Junior must go away from this reservation; to somewhere that has hope. Mr. P advises Junior to have perseverance so, he should never give up on his hope of becoming better. Mr. P believes hope leads to greater things, a better future. Therefore, he wants Junior to have hope and leave the reservation for the greater thing, a better future. Another example is Junior's experience at Reardan. For instance, while Roger is making inappropriate comments, Junior decides to defend Indians, black people, and buffalo, so “he punched Roger in the face”(Alexie 65). Then, he later realized that he “ had challenged the alpha dog and was now being rewarded for it.” This evidence implies that Junior’s experience of being bullied by Roger triggered him to stand up for himself. His hope and perseverance while standing up for himself and others, led to a greater outcome. Now, Junior was being respected as a result of him having hope and standing up himself; he was
While on trial, Junior was asked why he had turned to the FBI. “That was not the life that I wanted to live,” he testified. Junior has helped the FBI by leading them to bodies that were buried in various places, while Junior successfully stayed alive and well in MS-13. In the final closing of the article Junior says, “It just didn’t feel right. I had to do something…
“True Notebooks,” by Mark Salzman, is a book about the author’s experience teaching young offenders how to write. According to Salzman, one of Mark’s writing students is Nathaniel Hall. I believe Nathaniel is very smart and streetwise, but he yearns to be the center of attention. While reading, “True Notebooks,” I came across an essay written by Nathaniel, I like how the essay begins, but I don’t like its ending.
Overall, “You can't give up. You won't give up. You threw that book in my face because somewhere inside you refuse to give up.” (Alexie 43) Junior threw the book shows he is tired of poverty from the school on the reservation.
Mr. P tells Junior that “You 're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation.” (Alexie 63). Junior’s teacher knows that in order for Junior to find hope, he must isolate himself from his miserable reservation. He knows that Junior deserves better, and has fought too hard to lose hope, therefore he must take his hope and go somewhere where other people have hope. In order to do that, Junior must separate himself from all the horrors of the sad reservation by leaving.
He states in his text, “I was special, a former college student, a smart kid. I was one of those Indians that was supposed to make it, to rise above the rest of the reservation”. This presents credibility, tells the reader that he is educated and is not the person people expect him to be. The figurative language he uses suggests he doesn’t believe he did well. “I was supposed to rise above the rest” (57).
They also discuss how things are difficult on the rez now that Junior is going to school in Reardan. Junior discusses things of importance all the time so he is not conforming to rule three of the Code of Conduct.
It is necessary for individuals to find a balance between their fear and their foresight in order to live a life where they are satisfied with their choices. Initially, James has a successful, confident, life. He has a solid family at home and lives a relatively normal life. We can tell that James must have a solid family because even between moving countries because his dad is in the military he is still playing on the school basketball team and seems to fit right in.
The play, The Diary of Anne Frank is a true story about the life of a young girl, Anne, and other people through the sorrowful time of the holocaust. Within this play, you see the many ways of Mr. Frank, the father of Anne, and Mr. Van Daan, the father of Peter. One reflects greediness and cruelness while the other shows care and generosity. In The Diary of Anne Frank Mr. Frank and Mr. Van Daan have many different character traits.
Racism is like a disease, it spreads everywhere and no one can stop this from happening. This happens because every country has their own description of what is normal and what is not and people are often treated differently because of their race or gender. In the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Alexie uses the novel’s protagonist, Junior, to show that racism often changes how people think about each other. In the novel Junior was considered an outsider for his indigenous background, because of this he was often bullied by other white kids, had a lower self esteem and had a terrible education because the teachers would treat him differently just because he was indigenous. Throughout the novel, Alexie’s character, Junior,
The connection with the main idea is that this paragraph talks about how a person influences him. In conclusion Junior Shows that confidence reliefs stress and being scared. 2 Hope is the light into darkness. Junior’s teacher Mr.p shows him that there is hope beyond the rez. My evidence supporting point 2 is the quote when Mr. P convinces Arnold that he's a fighter and has to leave the reservation to get a better education.
Argumentative Essay In this essay I will compare two different stories, by giving information about them and I would expose them, the two stories I would talk about are “Anne Frank The Diary of a Young Girl”,and “Hitler YouthGrowing Up in Hitler 's Shadow” I choose this two because the holocaust has a great impact in the world. Anne Frank
Speak (1999), a novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson, is about Melinda Sordino, a girl whose problems started the day she was raped. That tragic event led to many changes in her life, she got isolated from the people that surrounded her, including family, friends and classmates. She did not speak to any one, feeling trapped and prey of her own thoughts and emotions, which is why, for this written assignment I’ve decided to write a diary entry in which Melinda Sordino talks about a dream she had that changed her perspective about life. The reason why I chose this type of text is because I think that the informal style and the first-person point-of-view allow the readers to place themselves in the same position as the one writing it. In this case, the diary entry goes for all those teenagers that, as Melinda, feel trapped and alone in a cruel world, thinking they do not fit on it.
Towards the end of the story Junior faced some terrible tragedies in his family, but he was able to find joy in his time of grieving, and some good came out of that in the end. This is a good book to read
The first and most prominent of Mr Chipping’s virtues was his strong fortitude. Fortitude is courage when faced with pain or adversity, and Chips displayed nothing less in the span of his life. When his wife and child both died, Chips was heartbroken and shaken to his core, yet he continued to teach at Brookfield and held back his grief. The new head of the school, Ralston, had unfairly insulted Mr. Chipping’s outdated teaching methods and put tremendous pressure on him to resign.
In the midst of poverty, he, however, says, “I can’t blame my parents for our poverty, because my mother and father are the twin suns around which I orbit and, my world would EXPLODE without them.” The narrator was not deterred by their poverty, his physical, and mental challenges. He is so ambitious, and therefore, has confidence in himself that out of his own ability, he will succeed in transforming himself into a composite image of elite personality. This was evidenced in his ability to communicate with the work of art and his enrolment into school. While in school, he faced many challenges that at a point, he was suspended from school after he accidently smashed Mr. P in the
