When it comes down to business there are two main things that people get confused on that is the different between a manager and a leader. The future is not a place you go put a place you create in order to do this you need to master two essential skills mainly leadership and management. Management is basically the usage of already build processes such as planning, staffing, measuring performance and budgeting thereby implement an organization to do well. Due to society, success is mostly viewed as a physical accomplishment. Ivan Chino, National Guard Soldier/NIU graduate, is not only a successful person because of his accomplishments, but more over his work ethic. When asked what makes a person successful, Chino replied, “The road with reaching success comes with many obstacles, but it also involves setting a new bar to achieve a higher form of success.” Clearly, Chino’s view of success is to constantly set high goals, despite the obstacles that come along with them. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP It is important to appreciate that leadership roles are different from management functions. In Stephen Covey’s (1999) book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, he quoted Peter Drucker as saying: ‘Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership is about determining whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.’ This suggests that management is about tasks, whereas leadership is about perception, judgement, skill and philosophy.
From my point of view , Leadership has more to it than I can possibly imagine. I define leadership as the art of enabling a group of people get to a specific destination. As a leader your main focus was to enable your followers lead theselves. As i think deeper i realise a person cannot choose to be a leader. I think a lot of the time people take on leadership positions without knowing.
CAN A MANAGER BECOME A GOOD LEADER SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CONCEPT It is important to distinguish an effective manager and a good leader, also to recognise the concept of being a good leader as well as an effective manager, managers aspiring to become a leader can benefit from acquiring leadership skills, a good leader possess several qualities that could easily be termed as good managerial skills. Hence a leader must be well developed physically, mentally and intellectually to be able to assume such positions. In this current challenging world is crucial for every manager to possess excellent management skills and develop exemplifying qualities of a good leader.
The managers specialize in setting a positive bench- mark around the boundaries for their teams and also individuals.. Moreover, Abraham Zaleznik (1977) discussed the parallel between leaders and managers and mentioned that they both make a valuable contribution to an organization; although, each one’s contribution is different (Lunenburg, 2011). While some obvious similarities can be found between leadership and management, there are also some noteworthy differences, as previously stated.
