In most novel to film adaptations, directors will often change certain elements of the work for the movie to move at a different pace. These changes may range from the main character’s hair colour to larger transformations like an important character being left out. In the case of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the largest difference from the play to film was the role of Ross. In the film adaptation of Macbeth, Ross is a developed and crucial character to the plot. This is shown through his involvement in Macbeth’s schemes, relationship with Macbeth, and loyalty to power in Scotland. In the play, Ross is seen as just another nobleman and the cousin of Lady Macduff. However, in the film version he is seen as a valuable follower in Macbeth’s eyes. Ross also plays a large role Macbeth’s power scheme due to him volunteering to be the third to murder Banquo. Despite being related to Lady Macduff, Ross plays a large role in the murder of his family by leaving all the doors open for the other conspirators. Unlike the play, Ross has a larger role and is a vital colleague to Macbeth. Similar to the play, Ross betrays Macbeth after not receiving the title “Thane of Cawdor”. After Macbeth was killed, Ross removes the crown from Macbeth and presents it to Malcolm. This shows how Ross will hold his loyalty to whomever is of power. To conclude, there are many similarities and differences in any film adaptation of a beloved novel or play. However, it is up to the audience to decide which version they enjoyed
