Dynamic Characters In Night Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel is the main character and narrator of the memoir Night, which recounts his experiences as a Jewish boy during the Holocaust. Through his harrowing testimony, we witness Elie's transformation from a devout and innocent young boy to a disillusioned and traumatized survivor. Elie's character can be analyzed in terms of his faith, his relationship with his father, and his internal struggles with guilt and shame. One of the defining features of Elie's character is his deep faith in God, which is challenged by the atrocities he witnesses during the Holocaust. In the early part of the memoir, Elie describes himself as a devout student of the Kabbalah, a Jewish mystical text, and aspires to become a master of Jewish theology.

In today's age we have been through hardships and tough times but compared to what Elie Wiesel went through we would look weak. Elie Wiesel, a holocaust survivor, wrote the book Night that showed his experience through World War ll by recounting his time he spent in concentration camps. He records his family being kicked out of their own home and being brought to hard labor by the Germans. With his father and him losing his mother and sisters Elie Wiesel undergoes changes in his faith and how he has matured.

Though the context of this piece may suggest it is strictly a historical memoir of Wiesel, the account is presented through complex literary techniques that produce a powerful and complex narrative which impacts the reader throughout. This testimony is given through the character of Eliezer, which is representative of Wiesel himself, with certain central themes present. He wrote an inspiring memoir Night, about his experiences at the concentration camps giving the reader emotions and empathy for Elie Wiesel. Elie also was in a moving documentary with Oprah called Winfrey and Wiesel Auschwitz. The documentary provided images and videos allowing the viewer to realize the amount of damage the Holocaust did to so many.

With some of the best selling books and highest rated movies being of the memoir genre, it’s easy to wonder how much of an impact they may have on the world. Through Elie Wiesel’s carefully crafted words in the critically acclaimed “Night”, the reader is immersed into the harsh reality that is the Holocaust and granted the opportunity to glance at Wiesel’s personal story. Though however renowned a memoir may be, the genre lacks the ability prevent such atrocities from happening again due to it’s unreliability, the readers own perception of the book and the obstinacy of human nature. Though unable to hinder forthcoming events, memoirs do present the freedom for one to share their intimate experiences, thoughts and feelings.

About one-third of all Jewish people in the world were murdered during the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel was not apart of that appalling statistic and credits luck for his survival, although his experiences were no less tragic. Elie Wiesel himself writes that he is not sure how or why he survived however, went on to accomplish many things with the chance he was given in honor of those who lost their lives. Wiesel was able to write novels, create his own foundation and receive awards during his time on Earth. Amy Ray once said,“It's important to have a voice; it's more important to use it.”

Pieces of literature have one universal thing in common no matter what form they are written in: a purpose. In Night by Elie Wiesel, several writing techniques are used to communicate that people need to take action on injustice in the world. Likewise, Nelson Mandela also utilizes several writing techniques in his 100 Days Speech to communicate that although progress has been made to rebuild and reconcile from past injustice, steps are still needed to be taken in order to improve society and ensure that horrific crimes and injustices do not occur in the future. Writing techniques these authors made use of to communicate these messages included persuasive techniques such as Pathos, Ethos, and Logos.

Elie Wiesel was in concentration camps for about half of his teen years along with his father. After being the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust he resolved to make what really happened more well-known. Elie Wiesel wrote dozens of books and submitted an essay titled “A God Who Remembers” to the book This I Believe. The essay focused on Elie Wiesel’s belief that those who have survived the Holocaust should not suppress their experiences but must share them so history will not repeat itself.

For every individual, it is difficult to give up two than one. In the novel Night, by Elie Wiesel, Elie magnanimously inputs his blood and sweat by sacrificing his strength and rations for the survival of his father. He holds unconditional hopes of believing that he will be able to make not only himself survive through the brutal camps under German control, but also his father through his efforts. Through this, Elie uses the relationship with his father to suggest that individuals should be independent for better survival because it is more efficient to create a single, strong individual rather than two weak ones. Elie may have continuously helped his father in lengthening his endurance, but failed to straighten his father’s will.

In any story, characters are the driving force behind the plot development. They are the people, anthropomorphized objects, and/or animals, that perform the actions and the dialogue in the story. Minor characters are characters that are relevant to the story only for a small portion of the story. These characters can have little to no impact on the story or, like in “Night” they could have a huge impact on the story. Every great story has minor characters.

Every so often, one must evaluate themselves for what they are. There are some who may be under the impression that they are superior than they truly are. This character, Moishe, has clearly evaluated his position in the social ladder. Everyone respects him for what he is, not what he is trying to be. This can be seen in today’s world as well.

It is a common assumption among numerous people in the world that the Holocaust never existed. In fact, almost fifty percent of the world population never even heard of the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel helped people around the world learn about the Holocaust through his book “Night.” He wanted people to see the bravery, courage, and guilt of the Jews through his book. “Night” shows the horrific and malicious acts in the German concentration camps during the Holocaust.

Night by Elie Wiesel shows when humans are put in horrible situations, the acts of selfishness greatly increase. The book shows that when humans are in crisis like the Holocaust everyone is desperate to survive, so they will do anything they can to get their basic needs. The people forgot who they are as human, and how it made Elie and others act differently towards each other. Elie Wiesel, and everyone who he meets along the way want to survive this, at times they forget why they want to live. But no one wants to get defeated by the Germans.
