John F. Kennedy, American politician and former 35th President of the United States once stated “Efforts and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” JFK is absolutely correct in saying this because although effort and courage are important in various situations throughout life, they are meaningless without a purpose backing them up. Some of the most prominent examples of how we use courage and effort for a purpose is when we defend our certain beliefs and virtues. Courage is being brave and taking the risk of doing something. In the book Witness by Karen Hesse many citizens did not like African-Americans , Jews and Catholics. Leonora Sutter, a character in the book, is a 12-year-old who is African-American and everyday deals with many citizens not liking her because the color of her skin. Courage comes in many ways and Leonora keeping her head high and not paying attention to it is an example. There are many racist people in the town like the KKK.

That, she said, is what builds self-confidence and courage" (page 2). I agree with this statement completely. Kids need to be able to take risks and feel danger. If kids never take risks, they won 't be very successful in life in general. To stand out, you need to take risks, and playing it safe doesn 't always work.

Courage is Earned! Courage can't just be said it has to be shown. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Mr. L.T. Morrision is the most brave, loyal, and kind person you will meet. Mr. Morrison showed courage by standing to the Wallaces, he moved Kaleb Wallace's car off the road, and when he stayed with the Logans even though he could get hurt Mr. Morrison’s actions proved that he knows what is right and he is going to stand up for that no matter what. Even though his parents were killed by whites, he stays calm and knows exactly how to deal with the situation.

Cornel West discusses courage in many aspects. In the first section, he talks about how it takes courage to examine yourself. Often times, we are quick to judge others on their decisions and beliefs. However, when the tables are turned around, we cower when having to criticize ourselves. In order to help fix the flaws in our system, we need to be able to critically think about ourselves.

Louie Zamperini was captured after his B-24 crashed in the pacific ocean and was stranded at sea for 47 days eating sharks and being attacked by them. Louie once imprisoned was beaten and starved to the maximum. Miné Okubo was moved to a camp outside of her town and imprisoned in the United States in fear of betrayal from all people with Asian decent after the pearl harbor attack. The experiences Louie and Miné went through a show that humans can overcome most things as long as you keep your mind set on the positives and think about the reasons you should stay alive.
