The election of 1896 was one of the most exciting in history. It brought modern techniques that are still in use today. The election occurred when the United States was still experiencing effects from the Panic of 1893; the divide between the rich and poor was larger than ever. Gold versus silver became a focal point for candidates. Although there were many candidates in the election, only two had gained votes from the Electoral College: William Jennings Bryan and William McKinley.

Reconstruction is during which the United States began to rebuild the Southern society after they lost to the civil war. It lasted from 1865 to 1877, and it was initiated by President Lincoln until his assassination in 1865. President Johnson continued Lincoln’s agenda to continue the Reconstruction. Throughout the process of Reconstruction, one of its main purpose was to guarantees for equal rights for all people, especially for the African Americans. Even though slavery was abolished after the civil war, many Southerners were still against the idea of equal rights for all black people, such as the Republicans.

This is where the Compromise of 1877 came in. The Compromise of 1877 was the deal that finally settled the disputed presidential election of 1876. The Compromise allowed the electoral commission to happen and awarded Hayes to be president over Tilden since he won the electoral votes. In order to do so Hayes would have to end Reconstruction on the South and remove the remaining federal troops out of the Southern states. Those states were South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana.

The election of 1860 was an election to decide between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas as the 16th president. The people in the south opposed to the idea of abolishing slavery.

Not long before 1876, slavery had been abolished and the black Americans slow rise to prestige positions in congress began. The south had been flooded with former slaves; now free men, who were presumed to be equal American citizen. Entering the year of 1876, Americans were gearing up for a presidential election that would majorly impact the socioeconomic role in the coming generations of black America. Rutherford Hayes, running as the republican electorate won the candidacy for President. Unfortunately, the positions on president came at the cost of an agreement that is now called the Compromise of 1877.

The reconstruction was a period during US history, which took place after the Civil War when the South restructured into the Union from 1865 to 1877. The end of reconstruction was a justification that freed all African Americans from slavery. Although they had set this decision and law, African Americans still suffered from social, economic and political barriers, which caused major tension between blacks and whites. The civil rights act of 1875, racial discrimination was banned from public facilities, such as schools or public transportations. The fourteenth amendment protected people against violations of their civil rights b states, not by the actions of the individuals.

The Jim Crow laws made it so that many black people became powerless as they couldn’t vote. They couldn’t vote because the lawmakers passed a law to make it so that people had to pay to vote. Because many black people at the time were poor many of them couldn’t pay this fee of voting and were left powerless when it came to political decisions. That is not the only way that the lawmakers made it so the blacks were powerless. They also made it so white and black people couldn’t be together in public so there had to be different railway cars, water fountains, stores, restaurants and pretty much their whole lives were apart.

Groups such as the Ku Klux Klan became prominent in the south. however, this was no longer something reconstruction could help former slaves with. Eventually, Hayes was elected after Johnsons’ impeachment and the Reconstruction era ended. Jim Crow laws were unfair towards blacks. One example was in some states like California, blacks and whites could not attend the same schools. The white would not go to school if they were with blacks. Another example of a Jim Crow law was, all railways had to provide separate cars or places where blacks and whites could sit. They could not sit in the same rail cars.

But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).

The American Civil War that was started due to the controversy over slavery in 1861, was won by The Union supported by President Lincoln against the Confederate states. President Lincoln’s original goal during the civil war was to reunify the nation as quickly as possible and help both sides come to an understanding. After the Civil War ended in 1865, the newly formed United States’ reconstruction era began. The Reconstruction era was put into effect by the Congress in 1866 and lasted until 1877. The Union’s victory in the Civil War had given African Americans a new sense of hope, devastated the southern economy, and eased the history of disunity in American political life.

The Reconstruction Era occurred in 1865, it was was a period after the Civil War in which America was focused on rebuilding the broken South. In 1867, the Radical reconstruction gave former slaves a voice in government. During this era, formers slaves gained a platform in the government, with some blacks as Congressmen. However, not everyone supported the idea of Reconstruction. Less than a decade after the Reconstruction period, a small group composed of democratic ex-confederate veterans, white farmers and white southerners sympathetic to white supremacy joined forces together to form the Ku Klux Klan.

Reconstruction era, which was followed by post-civil war, was meant to unite the states back together, reconstruct properties, and most importantly, abolish slavery in the South.
